The epoch times

Jeffries doesn’t confirm Democrat support for debt ceiling deal.

Democrats Noncommittal on Debt Ceiling Deal

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) was asked about the debt ceiling deal negotiated between Republicans and the White House, but he remained noncommittal.

“I do expect that there will be Democratic support, once we have the ability to actually be fully briefed by the White House,” Jeffries said.

The deal, announced by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and President Joe Biden, would suspend the debt ceiling until 2025, cap non-defense spending, enhance work requirements for government assistance, and reclaim unspent COVID-19 relief funds, among other measures.

Waiting for the Details

Jeffries said that Democrats need to see the legislative text before committing to the package.

“Until we see the text, I’m not going to predict how many Democrats might support the package,” Jeffries said.

However, he did acknowledge the importance of avoiding a catastrophic default and applauded the deal for doing so.

“President Biden has delivered a result that prevents us from our economy crashing and stops the extreme MAGA Republicans from triggering a job-killing recession,” Jeffries said.

Final Details to be Hammered Out

The legislative text of the deal is expected to be released on the afternoon of May 28, following a scheduled meeting between McCarthy and President Biden to finalize the details of the package.

  • Suspension of the debt ceiling until 2025
  • Capping non-defense spending
  • Enhancing work requirements for government assistance
