House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) defended Vice President Kamala Harris’s handling of the southern border, arguing she is a “problem solver” on this and multiple topics.
Jeffries’s praise for Harris comes as she is the presumptive 2024 presidential nominee for the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. The New York lawmaker contended that Harris is always brainstorming ideas meant to “make life better” for residents in the United States.
“And that’s a clear contrast with the former president of the United States who never met a policy that he had any idea of studying or understanding,” Jeffries said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “He just weaponizes issues, for instance, like the border, to try to gain political power but has no interest in trying to solve them. Kamala Harris is a problem solver who gets things done for hardworking American taxpayers.”
Jeffries made that statement even though many have been critical of her handling of border security, a topic former President Donald Trump has discussed on the campaign trail. A recent poll stated that 63% of respondents rated Harris’s handling of the border as “poor” to “fair,” with 70% of independents among those rating her job poorly.
The minority leader also addressed the 2024 elections for the House of Representatives, in which the Republican Party has a small majority. Jeffries argued there are around five seats “in play” for Democrats in New York and that the party could retake the House with the Empire State alone.
Ahead of the 2024 elections, the Harris campaign debuted an ad propping up her work on the border. The ad states that voters have two choices in the presidential election: one being a candidate who will “fix our broken immigration system” and the other is “trying to stop her,” the latter referring to Trump.
Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign has released an ad targeting Harris’s lack of action on the border, calling her “failed, weak, and dangerously liberal.” The Trump team has plunged $12 million into airing this ad on broadcast, cable, and digital mediums in six battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
