Authorities in Ventura County, California, are currently investigating the tragic death of a 69-year-old Jewish man who was killed during a pro-Israel rally. The incident occurred during a heated confrontation with a pro-Palestine protester.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of battery at a demonstration on Westlake and Thousand Oaks Boulevards after a verbal altercation broke out between Paul Kessler and an unnamed protester on Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.
“Witness accounts indicated that Kessler was involved in a physical altercation with [pro-Palestinian] counterprotesters,” a department press release stated. “During the altercation, Kessler fell backwards and struck his head on the ground.”
An autopsy conducted on Monday confirmed that Kessler’s death was ruled a homicide, with the cause of death being a blunt force head injury, according to authorities.
Furthermore, the department has not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime and is actively investigating the incident.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles expressed their outrage in a post on X, accusing the pro-Palestine protester of throwing a megaphone at Kessler.
The group strongly condemned the act of violence against the Jewish community, stating that ”violence against [the Jewish] people has no place in civilized society.” They vowed to do everything in their power to prevent such incidents.
The group expressed their condolences to the victim’s family and highlighted that this is the fourth major anti-Semitic crime in Los Angeles this year alone.
Footage circulating on social media captured the moment when Kessler sustained a head injury, with individuals wearing “Free Palestine” jackets rushing to his aid.
As the investigation is still ongoing, no arrests have been made at this time.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Benny Gantz emphasized the significance of Kessler’s death, stating that it should serve as a warning to the world.
Gantz urged the free world to unite against the murderous ideology of Hamas and fight against it to stand on the right side of history, according to Israeli media.
