Jewish student traumatized by anti-Semitism at MIT chosen as State of the Union guest
A Message Against Anti-Semitism: MIT Student Attends State of the Union
A graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who recently testified about the growing anti-Semitism on her campus will be attending the State of the Union address on Thursday as a special guest of Speaker Johnson.
Talia Khan, a courageous student, sees this high-profile invitation as a powerful message to universities that fail to address anti-Semitism. She believes that Jewish students cannot be silenced.
“I’m grateful that Speaker Johnson is showing that he is listening to the Jewish students on campuses and taking our concerns seriously by inviting me to the State of the Union,” Khan told The Daily Wire. “It is an important message to universities that they cannot continue to try to silence us.”
Khan, who comes from a mixed background with a Jewish mother and an Afghani Muslim father, spoke at a House Education and Workforce Committee panel alongside other students from across the country. They all testified about the rise of anti-Semitism on their campuses since Hamas’s attack on Israeli civilians on October 7.
During the panel, Khan shared her personal experiences of trauma on campus, including violent chants, mobs blocking student pathways, and an unhelpful administration.
“Talia Khan has courageously exposed the pain many Jewish students are experiencing as antisemites and Hamas-sympathizers are supported by Democrat-backed university administrators,” Johnson said in a statement. “I’m proud to have Talia join me as my guest for the State of the Union as House Republicans stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters against antisemitism.”
Thank you @ADL and @JGreenblattADL for sharing my speech and helping raise awareness about these issues on campus! https://t.co/3qhV8wOeKU

“Jews are forced to tiptoe around, being careful to follow all rules to a T, hiding our Jewish clothing and symbols, while anti-Israel students and faculty bring outside mobs and continue to break rules, uninhibited by the feckless MIT administration,” Khan said. “I am left scared and vulnerable, as the MIT administration repeatedly intimidates me and other Jews into taking our Israeli flags down from our offices, though we still see Palestinian flags, and flags representing other nationalities and identities, waving freely around campus.”
Khan also highlighted the resignation of all members of the faculty anti-Semitism advisory council, who grew tired of being discounted and ignored by the administration.
A 32-page report written by professor Lionel C. Kimerling, a Materials Science and Engineering expert, documented numerous incidents that support Khan’s claims.
According to Khan, the presence of anti-Semitism on campus not only causes a brain drain but also poses national security threats.
“For America to maintain its status as the most innovative country in the world, we must ensure safety for all in our leading academic institutions, like MIT,” she said. “Losing great minds at MIT to shelter terrorism-supporting student groups is a national security threat, and everyone on and off campus should be concerned.”
Khan expressed her gratitude to Johnson for the invitation and emphasized that supporting Jewish students should be a nonpartisan issue that the entire country should recognize.
“The rampant anti-Semitism we are now seeing on campuses all across the country reflects a deep moral rot at the core of our nation’s higher educational institutions,” Khan said. “Those attacking Jewish students not only hold dangerous and unacceptable anti-Semitic views but also harbor attitudes completely antithetical to American values.”
Other notable guests invited by Speaker Johnson include the parents of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter imprisoned in Russia since last March, Mia Schem, a 21-year-old who was held hostage by Hamas in Gaza, the mother and brother of Omer Neutra who is still held hostage, and two New York City police officers who were attacked by a mob of migrants in January.
How can universities and society as a whole actively combat anti-Semitism and promote dialogue and understanding
Gh we have the right to display them.”
Khan’s testimony sheds light on a pervasive issue that many Jewish students face on college campuses. According to a report by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), anti-Semitic incidents on college campuses are on the rise, with a 89% increase in incidents in 2019 compared to the previous year. These incidents include vandalism, harassment, and even physical assault.
It is disheartening to see that university administrations, like MIT, are failing to address this issue adequately. Jewish students should feel safe and supported on their campuses, not fearful and silenced. As Speaker Johnson’s invitation to Talia Khan demonstrates, it is imperative for universities to take these concerns seriously and take concrete actions to combat anti-Semitism.
The rise of anti-Semitism is not isolated to college campuses, it is a global issue that needs to be confronted. Hate and discrimination against any religious or ethnic group should never be tolerated, and it is everyone’s responsibility to stand up against it.
Talia Khan’s bravery in sharing her experiences and speaking out against anti-Semitism is commendable. She is not only advocating for Jewish students at MIT, but for Jewish students everywhere who face similar challenges and discrimination.
It is encouraging to see that there are individuals like Speaker Johnson who listen to the voices of marginalized groups and take action. By inviting Talia Khan to the State of the Union, he is sending a strong message to universities and to the country as a whole that anti-Semitism will not be tolerated.
As we reflect on Talia Khan’s story and the broader issue of anti-Semitism, we must remember the importance of education and awareness. It is crucial to promote dialogue and understanding among diverse communities to combat ignorance and prejudice.
In conclusion, Talia Khan’s attendance at the State of the Union is a significant step toward raising awareness about anti-Semitism and the challenges faced by Jewish students on college campuses. It is a call to action for universities to address this issue, and a reminder to society that anti-Semitism has no place in our communities. Let us strive for a future where all individuals, regardless of their religious or ethnic background, can live free from discrimination and persecution.
