Poll finds JFK is the most popular recent former president.
Americans Rate Former Presidents: Kennedy Tops, Trump Lags
A new Gallup poll has revealed fascinating insights into how Americans retrospectively view their former presidents. The survey found that John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush received the highest approval ratings among recent presidents.
Kennedy Leads the Pack
John F. Kennedy emerged as the clear favorite, with an impressive overall approval rating of 90%. Reagan and Bush followed closely behind, with ratings of 69% and 66% respectively.
Trump and Nixon Trail Behind
On the other end of the spectrum, former President Donald Trump and Richard Nixon received the lowest approval ratings. Trump’s rating stood at 46%, while Nixon’s was even lower at 32%. Both Republicans faced significant disapproval, with Trump at 54% and Nixon at 65%.
Charitable Ratings for Former Presidents
Gallup’s news release highlighted an interesting trend: Americans tend to view former presidents more favorably once they have left office. This pattern was evident in the survey results, with majorities approving of most former presidents’ job performance. However, Trump and Nixon were exceptions to this trend.
Trump’s Prospects for 2024
Despite his low retrospective rating, Trump continues to enjoy strong support among Republican voters, with a remarkable 91% approval. This is particularly significant as he considers running for president again in 2024.
JFK’s Enduring Popularity
John F. Kennedy’s high approval rating is noteworthy because it transcends political affiliation. Regardless of party, JFK remains highly regarded, with approval ratings ranging from 89% to 92%.

JFK’s Legacy in the Spotlight
These ratings for JFK come at a time when the Biden administration has released thousands of documents related to his assassination in 1963. Additionally, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s bid for the 2024 presidency and his comments about alleged CIA involvement in his uncle’s death have brought JFK back into the public spotlight.
The Gallup poll surveyed 1,013 U.S. adults from June 1 to June 22, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
