Jill Biden Goes Full Karen, Demands Affirmative Action for White Basketball Players

‘We not giving out participation trophies’: First Lady denounced as a ‘sick’ ‘racist’ for suggesting NCAA losers visit White House

What happened: Dr. Jill Biden, Ed.D., caused a stir on Monday by suggesting that the losing Iowa women’s basketball team, who are mostly white, should be honored at the White House despite losing the NCAA championship game against mostly black Louisiana State University Tigers.

Biden made the statement during an appearance in Denver, saying, “I know we’ll have the champions come to the White House, we always do. So, we hope LSU will come, But, you know, I’m going to tell Joe I think Iowa should come, too, because they played such a good game.”

Her comments were quickly interpreted by many as an attempt to give white losers a consolation prize or affirmative action, suggesting that they should be awarded an honor typically reserved for winners of the championship. The backlash on social media was swift and widespread.

What they’re saying: Angel Reece, LSU’s star forward, referred to Biden’s suggestion as a “joke” in a tweet. Other Twitter users tweeted their outrage:

• “Jill Biden inviting Iowa to the White House is a joke and it honestly feels like racism.” —@TeflonBernie

• “There is only ONE winning team here that deserves to be recognized.” —@tenilleclarke1

• “NO NO NO LETTING WHITE TEARS WIN IS NOT THE ANSWER. They didn’t win period you can come to the White House when you win.” —@__aarum

• “Back in the kitchen Jill.” —@OGICEY

Why it matters: This is not the first time Dr. Jill has faced criticism for insensitive remarks. In July 2022, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists condemned Biden for “using breakfast tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio.”

What they’re saying (Biden family edition): Hunter Biden, her stepson, has made derogatory comments about her in the past.

Bottom line: Critics are urging people to #NeverGoFullKaren, which entails trying to console white fragility at the expense of black achievement.

Final thoughts: Although people have criticized Dr. Biden for her insensitive behavior, it is important to continue to respect her academic title of “Doctor.”

Biden’s press secretary, Vanessa Valdivia, said in a statement that Biden “looks forward to celebrating the LSU Tigers on their championship win at the White House.”

Although some people have interpreted Biden’s comments as trying to minimize black women’s achievements, Valdivia insisted they were “intended to applaud the historic game and all women athletes.”
