Jim Jordan’s top priority as Speaker would be to assist Israel.
Jim Jordan Vows to Support Israel as Speaker of the House
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) declared on Sunday that his top priority, if elected Speaker of the House, would be to stand with Israel.
In an interview on Fox News, Jordan made this promise as Israel faces off against Hamas following a surprise attack launched by the militant group from Gaza over the weekend.
When asked about his first directive as speaker, Jordan responded, “to help the state of Israel.”

“There will be some resolution on the floor to support the state of Israel,” Jordan stated. He also mentioned that he would consult with House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and the Senate.
“We will work with the State Department and the White House,” Jordan continued. “But that is something that I think gets bipartisan, bicameral, full support from the United States government, because, again, this is our great friend and great ally, the state of Israel.”
Last week, the GOP-led House voted to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as speaker, with some GOP lawmakers expressing concerns about his leadership. Eight Republicans joined with Democrats to vote McCarthy out of the position.
Following McCarthy’s announcement that he would not run for speaker again, two GOP members, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Jordan, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, declared their candidacy for the position. Democrats are likely to support someone like Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). Both Jordan and Scalise, as well as Jeffries, have condemned Hamas and expressed their support for Israel. Jordan has also received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
There has been some concern over how the United States may be temporarily affected in its ability to respond to the Israel conflict due to the speaker vacancy. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) is currently serving as speaker pro tempore, raising questions about his access to intelligence reports and the House’s ability to pass measures in the interim.
However, this issue may soon be resolved. Once most GOP members unite behind a single candidate, a chamber-wide vote for the next House speaker could take place as early as next week, with a simple majority needed for victory.
In the meantime, President Joe Biden has directed additional support for Israel in response to the terrorist assault by Hamas, according to a press pool report on Sunday.
While Jordan emphasized that Israel would be his main focus as speaker, he also mentioned that his attention would turn to spending legislation, as a potential government shutdown looms in mid-November when a six-week continuing resolution expires.
“The next order of business is to deal with what’s coming on November 17,” Jordan stated. “And I will outline a plan that I think we have to have.”
What are the potential implications of having a Speaker who prioritizes support for Israel?

Jim Jordan’s declaration of support for Israel comes at a critical time when the nation is facing heightened tensions and violence in the region. The surprise attack launched by Hamas has led to a significant escalation in the conflict, endangering the lives of many innocent civilians.
By vowing to support Israel, Jordan aligns himself with a longstanding tradition of bipartisan support for the state. The close alliance between the United States and Israel has been a cornerstone of American foreign policy for decades, regardless of which party is in power. Jordan’s promise to stand with Israel demonstrates his recognition of its importance not only to the region but also to the United States’ strategic interests.
As Speaker of the House, Jordan would have the power to influence legislation and policies that affect the United States’ relationship with Israel. His commitment to prioritize support for Israel indicates that he would actively work towards strengthening this alliance and ensure that it remains a top priority for the United States.
Jordan’s statement also highlights the need for bipartisan cooperation in addressing the challenges faced by Israel. The mention of consulting with House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul and the Senate shows an understanding that support for Israel should transcend party lines and be a unified effort from the entire United States government.
The GOP’s decision to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker reflects a desire for change and new leadership within the party. Jordan’s candidacy, along with Steve Scalise, demonstrates a willingness to step up and provide that new direction. By pledging to prioritize support for Israel, Jordan distinguishes himself as a candidate who understands the importance of global alliances and the role the United States plays in international affairs.
While the race for Speaker of the House continues to unfold, Jim Jordan’s declaration to support Israel sends a clear message of his commitment to the nation and its security. If elected, his actions will be closely scrutinized as he works to uphold this promise and navigate the complex dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
As the situation in the Middle East remains volatile, the United States needs leaders who understand the significance of supporting Israel and can effectively engage in diplomacy to de-escalate tensions. Jim Jordan’s vow to support Israel positions him as a potential Speaker who recognizes the importance of this alliance and is willing to prioritize it in his term.
