Jim Jordan Subpoenas Citibank for Alleged ‘Back Channel’ Sharing of Customer Data with FBI in Jan. 6 Probe
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan has issued a subpoena to Citibank after the company refused to cooperate with the committee’s investigation into the potential illegal sharing of Americans’ private data with the FBI.
“The Committee and Select Subcommittee have obtained evidence showing that at least one major financial institution provided the FBI with private financial data without legal process,” Jordan stated.
The investigation focuses on the extent to which financial institutions, including Citibank, may have shared customer information with federal law enforcement, even when there was no individualized nexus to criminal conduct.
Specifically, the customer data sharing with FBI in Jan. 6 probe.”>alleged data sharing involves transactions made in the Washington, D.C., area around the time of the January 6 Capitol incursion.
According to Jordan, Bank of America voluntarily provided the FBI with a list of individuals who made transactions in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area using a Bank of America credit or debit card between January 5 and January 7, 2021. Individuals with firearms purchases on their bank records were given priority on that list, regardless of the time or place of the purchase.
Documents obtained by the committee also suggest that the FBI provided Bank of America with specific search query terms to identify customers who had made firearm purchases or had purchased hotel, Airbnb, or airline travel within a certain date range.
This data could potentially have been used to track the travel of individuals suspected of rioting at the Capitol, as reported by The Hill.
Citibank is the only major financial institution that has chosen not to comply with the Judiciary Committee’s investigation. The committee has previously contacted Bank of America, J.P. Morgan, PNC, Truist, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo.
In addition to the subpoena issued to Citibank, Jordan has also sent subpoenas to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray, alleging that the FBI and DOJ colluded with Big Tech and other intermediaries to censor certain viewpoints, in violation of the First Amendment.
The committee has recently obtained documents revealing that multiple FBI field offices worked together to draft an internal memo that reportedly compared traditional Catholics to domestic terrorists.
