Jordan (R-Ohio.) has canceled the third⁣ vote ⁤scheduled ‌for Thursday,‍ allowing legislative affairs to resume ‍amidst the challenges of ‌two wars and a potential government‌ shutdown.

This decision comes after Jordan failed⁣ to secure 217 votes in the first two rounds. Instead, he fell short with 199 votes on Wednesday and 200 votes on Tuesday.

However, it remains uncertain⁤ whether McHenry (R-N.C.) will‌ receive enough ⁢support from other Republicans to maintain the interim position ⁢until January, as⁤ several Republicans have expressed their opposition to Jordan’s recent decision.

“It’s the biggest F-U to Republican voters I’ve ‌ever seen,” one conservative Jordan ally, Rep. Jim Banks, (R-Ind.), said as he left ⁤the meeting. “We need to elect a speaker. We were sent here to elect⁢ a speaker. ‌It’s a cop out.‍ … It’s a ⁢big mistake, ⁤and over half the Republicans in‍ that room⁣ are against it.”

If McHenry garners enough⁣ support, he will be granted the same powers as an elected speaker, but only until January 2024.

Sources indicate that Jordan will not withdraw from the race and will remain the GOP’s Speaker-designee.

David Joyce (R-Ohio.) and other GOP members have been advocating for this move following Jordan’s unsuccessful ‍second vote for the speakership.

“After two weeks without a Speaker of the House and⁣ no clear candidate ⁤with ⁢217 votes in ‍the Republican conference, it is time to look at other viable⁤ options.⁢ By empowering Patrick McHenry ⁢as Speaker Pro ‌Tempore, we can take care of our ally Israel‍ until a new Speaker is elected,” Joyce stated prior to Wednesday’s vote.

There⁣ is still division among⁤ other Republicans regarding whether to grant⁤ McHenry the role.

“Never⁣ in the ‌history of this institution have we ever appointed a Speaker pro tempore ‍with the ⁤full powers ‌of ⁤the Speakership⁤ without having a duly elected Speaker,” Rep. ‍Chip ⁣Roy (R-Texas) told reporters.

Furthermore, Democrats have expressed openness to⁢ electing ⁢McHenry but⁣ have also made it clear that the ⁣GOP needs to approach them for their support.

“We’re looking for ways⁤ to reopen the‌ government and get bipartisan bills to the floor. So the ball’s in their⁢ court. This is their civil war. They’re the majority. They have to elect⁣ the speaker. We hope that ⁣they will come to us now that there have ⁤been two ⁢votes, and Jim Jordan has ⁤been unable to put it together and find that bipartisanship,” ⁣House Minority Whip‌ Katherine Clark‍ (D-Mass.) told reporters after leaving a conference meeting.

⁣How has ⁢Jim Jordan’s decision to support an interim ⁢speaker affected the impasse in the race for Speaker of the House?

To our newsletter.

The impasse in the race for Speaker of the House continues as‍ Republican ‍representative Jim Jordan⁣ faces mounting challenges in securing enough votes. In a surprising move, ⁢Jordan has decided to support a plan that⁤ would temporarily empower interim speaker Patrick McHenry until January.

This decision comes after Jordan failed to secure the necessary votes in the first two rounds of voting. With 199 votes on Wednesday⁤ and 200 votes on Tuesday, Jordan fell short of the 217 votes needed for victory. As a result, he has ‌canceled ⁢the ⁤third ⁤scheduled vote, allowing legislative affairs to resume amidst the challenges of⁢ two wars and a ⁢potential government shutdown.

However, the fate of McHenry’s interim position remains uncertain. Several⁤ Republicans have expressed their opposition to Jordan’s recent ⁢decision, casting doubt ‍on whether McHenry will receive enough support to maintain the ‍position until January.

“It’s the biggest F-U to Republican voters⁤ I’ve ever seen,” said one conservative Jordan ally, Rep. Jim Banks ‍(R-Ind.), expressing his disappointment with ⁤the decision. “We need to elect ‌a speaker. We were sent here to⁤ elect a speaker. It’s a cop out…‍ It’s a big mistake,⁤ and over half the Republicans in that room are against it.”

If McHenry does garner enough support, he will be granted⁢ the same powers as an elected speaker, but ⁣only until January 2024. ⁤Despite this possibility, Jordan has stated that he will not withdraw from the race and will remain the GOP’s Speaker-designee.

Some Republican members, including David Joyce (R-Ohio.), have ⁣advocated for empowering McHenry as Speaker Pro Tempore ⁣following Jordan’s failed second vote. Joyce believes that⁣ this move will allow ⁣the ‍GOP to take care of their ally, Israel, until a new Speaker is elected.

However, there is still division among ⁢other Republicans regarding whether McHenry should be granted the role. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) raised ⁣concerns about appointing a Speaker Pro Tempore with the full ‌powers of the Speakership without having a duly elected Speaker.

Meanwhile, Democrats have ‌expressed openness to electing McHenry but have made it clear that it⁤ is up to the GOP to approach them for their support. House ⁣Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) stated,‌ “We’re looking for ways to reopen the‍ government and get bipartisan bills to the floor.⁢ So the ball’s in their court. This⁤ is⁣ their civil war. They’re⁣ the majority. They have to elect ⁤the speaker. We hope that they will come ‍to us now that there have been two votes, and Jim Jordan has been unable to⁣ put it together ⁤and find that bipartisanship.”

As the stalemate continues, the⁣ role of Speaker of the House remains⁤ vacant, and the challenges facing the government continue⁣ to ⁤persist. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the path forward and resolving‍ the impasse in Washington.
