Jimmy Buffett’s death cause disclosed.
Musician Jimmy Buffett’s Cancer Battle Revealed
The details surrounding musician Jimmy Buffett’s courageous four-year battle with cancer have recently come to light. Despite his diagnosis of Merkel cell skin cancer, Buffett chose to keep his struggle private, continuing to perform throughout his treatment, with his most recent performance in July.
Supporting Cancer Research
In lieu of flowers, Buffett’s family has requested donations to be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute or the MD Anderson Cancer Center. These contributions will help further cancer research and support those affected by the disease.
A Rare Form of Skin Cancer
Merkel cell carcinoma, the type of cancer Buffett faced, primarily develops in the outermost layer of the skin where Merkel cells are located. This form of cancer is more commonly found in older individuals, according to the Mayo Clinic. The American Cancer Society reports a 5-year relative survival rate of 65% for Merkel cell carcinoma.
Each year, approximately 2,000 Americans are diagnosed with this type of skin cancer, affecting about 1 in every 130,000 individuals.
A Musical Legacy
Buffett’s iconic hit song from 1977, “Margaritaville,” quickly gained a devoted following, embodying the carefree and relaxed beach lifestyle. His music became synonymous with easy living and provided an escape for many.
Buffett is survived by his loving wife, Jane, as well as his daughters, Savannah and Sarah, and his son, Cameron.
