Biden greenlights Chinese EV battery factory in Michigan, taxpayers bear national security risk.
A Chinese Electric Vehicle Battery Manufacturer Receives Approval for Michigan Factory Despite Opposition
A federal panel has given the green light to a Chinese electric vehicle battery manufacturer to establish a factory in Michigan, despite concerns and opposition from local residents. The project, which is receiving $175 million in state taxpayer dollars, will proceed after the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States determined that it was not within their purview under the Defense Production Act.
Gotion, the Chinese company behind the project, had voluntarily submitted all necessary documents to the U.S. Department of Treasury Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. for transparency and accountability. The company’s vice president of North American operations, Chuck Thelen, stated that they received a response indicating that it was not a covered transaction.
Republican Rep. John Moolenaar of Michigan, who opposes the project, criticized the panel for its lack of action. He highlighted Gotion’s failure to disclose the materials submitted to the committee and the non-disclosure agreements it forced Michigan officials to sign. Moolenaar also pointed out that Gotion’s articles of association pledge allegiance to the Chinese Communist Party and commit to carrying out party activities.
If Michigan is considered a “climate refuge,” why hasn’t an environmental impact study been done on the taxpayer funded CCP-affiliated Gotion? Why are all the battery plant projects going near our rivers? Could it be because they require hundreds of thousands of gallons of water… pic.twitter.com/VvXYv30VZ5

Despite the concerns raised, Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer sees the project as an opportunity to enhance the state’s position as a global hub of mobility and electrification. The $2.4 billion project has received approval from state legislators, who allocated $175 million of state funds for its construction.
Local residents, however, expressed outrage at the decision. They criticized the lack of information provided and the absence of due diligence in the approval process. Marjorie Steele, a resident of the area, voiced her anger and promised to continue fighting against the project.
Gotion is a #CCP company that pledges allegiance to the commies in Beijing. I am disgusted that @POTUS is disregarding Michiganders and allowing this state-controlled Chinese company to dig its roots into our state.https://t.co/8eyQ6s22s2

Joseph Cella, a former U.S. ambassador and member of a group scrutinizing China’s expansion in Michigan, expressed concern over the deal. He warned that China is actively seeking opportunities to expand its influence in states and that the Chinese Communist Party holds significant sway in these matters.
The approval of the Chinese EV battery factory in Michigan has raised questions about national security risks and the potential impact on the environment. As the project moves forward, it remains a topic of contention and debate.
