Biden criticizes GOP for opposing student loan forgiveness.
President Biden Slams Republicans Opposing Student Loan Forgiveness Plan
During his commencement speech at Howard University in Washington D.C., President Joe Biden expressed his outrage towards Republicans who are trying to halt his student loan forgiveness plan. He pointed out that many of these Republicans received relief loans to keep their businesses afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Biden’s Forgiveness Plan
Biden’s forgiveness plan aims to help tens of millions of people and even wipe student debt for some individuals. The plan would be especially beneficial to those on Pell Grants, which are given to college students who display exceptional financial need.
Student Loans on Pause
Student loans have been on pause since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and are set to resume 60 days after either June 30 or when the Supreme Court rules on Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, whichever comes sooner.
Republican Concerns
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and House Education and Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) expressed concern about possible fraud in the Department of Education’s new income-driven repayment policies for student loans. They noted that the plan would lead to fraud because the department does not require a borrower to verify their income.
Despite Republican opposition, Biden remains committed to his student loan forgiveness plan and believes it will help millions of Americans struggling with student debt.
