Joe Biden heads to Florida on Saturday to assess Hurricane Idalia’s aftermath.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden to Survey Hurricane Damage in Florida
President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are embarking on a trip to Florida today to assess the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia. They will be visiting Live Oak, a community that has been severely impacted by the storm. During their visit, President Biden will meet with residents affected by the hurricane and deliver remarks.
Continuing to Prioritize Disaster Relief
This visit to Florida comes on the heels of the White House’s request for an additional billion in disaster relief from Congress. This funding will be added to the emergency supplemental funding request, which already includes $12 billion for relief efforts in Hawaii following the devastating wildfires.
The total amount of $16 billion in additional disaster relief will be combined with the previous billion emergency supplemental request. This request includes $24 billion in aid to Ukraine as they face ongoing challenges from a Russian invasion.
House Republicans Call for Separation of Disaster Relief and Ukraine Aid
House Republicans have expressed their opposition to linking disaster relief and Ukraine aid together. They believe that these two issues should be addressed separately.
Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) voiced his concerns on social media, stating, “Disaster recovery relief for Florida, Hawaii, & other states reeling from recent disasters should NOT be attached to additional money for Ukraine. We must put the American people & the homeland FIRST. Shelling out billions to Ukraine on the backs of hurting Americans is wrong.”
Despite differing opinions, the Biden administration remains committed to providing support to both disaster-stricken areas and Ukraine.
Next Stop: Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
After their visit to Florida, President Biden and first lady Jill Biden will head to their house in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where they will spend the rest of the Labor Day weekend.
Stay tuned for updates on their trip and ongoing efforts to provide relief to those affected by natural disasters.
