‘Joe Bidenopoulos’ Has Returned
In a recent visit to the White House’s Greek Independence Day celebration, President Joe Biden brought up a legend of his past, where the Greek community of Wilmington, Delaware, gave him the honorary name “Joe Bidenopoulos.” According to the legend, the Greek American community overwhelmingly supported his first bid to the Senate half a century ago, which led to him receiving the nickname.
Biden had made similar claims in 2012 while giving a speech at a Greek diner in Ohio while running for Vice President, which indicates this isn’t just a new story arising out of his old age. In these speeches, Biden used his self-proclaimed title comically, referring to himself as “Joe Bidenopoulos” to the audience.
While Biden’s familiar phrase “You think I’m kidding?” often precedes these sorts of anecdotes, it seems that this title is not made up. It sounds like something Biden would say, considering he has a background in odd ethnic jokes, but it’s clear that the story of “Joe Bidenopoulos” is more fact than fiction.
