With a difficult ⁢reelection year approaching,⁢ West Virginia’s ‍Sen. Joe Manchin is ⁣making⁣ headlines by championing a measure to block ⁢gas stove ‍bans. However, it’s‍ worth noting that ‌just last year, Manchin opposed a similar measure,⁣ expressing ⁤doubt ⁢that ‌natural ‍gas bans would ever come to fruition.

Manchin ‌recently released a video where he proudly ⁢announced his efforts to secure various priorities ‌for West Virginia, including a measure⁣ to prohibit the Biden administration from banning gas stoves. However, just two ‍years ago, Manchin opposed an amendment ⁢that ⁢aimed to prevent federal funds ⁣from ⁢being‌ used to ban the⁣ use of⁤ natural gas in residential ‌and⁤ commercial ⁢buildings. ⁢At the time, Manchin didn’t see ⁢the need for such a measure.

“I would be as concerned⁢ as Senator ‍Barrasso if I thought that would happen,” Manchin stated during a Senate‍ Energy Committee meeting ⁣in‍ July 2021. ⁢”I don’t⁢ see that ‍happening.” However, other Democrats ‌disagreed, ⁤with⁢ some arguing that a shift‌ towards electrification would ‌bring energy savings.

This‌ isn’t the first time Manchin has changed his⁣ stance on energy⁤ policy⁤ as an election⁢ year approaches. In May, he criticized the‍ Biden administration ⁤for ‌not promoting offshore oil‍ and gas⁢ development, despite ‍previously ⁤voting against a⁤ measure ⁢that ‍would‌ have required more offshore lease ⁢sales. Manchin’s political future remains uncertain,⁤ with⁢ speculation about a potential third-party⁢ presidential ‍bid. However, his⁢ Senate ‍colleagues are urging him⁣ to ⁤run for ⁤reelection, although it’s expected to⁢ be a challenging‍ campaign.

Regardless of his future plans, Manchin has recently‌ positioned himself as ⁢a critic⁤ of President Biden’s spending, ⁣particularly regarding‍ the⁤ trillion-dollar Inflation Reduction Act. ⁣However, it’s worth ‌noting⁤ that Manchin himself ‌played a⁣ significant role in shaping⁤ and ⁢supporting the bill‍ just⁤ a ⁢few months ago.

⁣ ‍

In addition ‍to⁣ the controversy surrounding gas stove bans,⁤ the‍ Biden administration has ‍moved forward⁢ with ⁢plans to restrict gas stove sales. The Energy ⁤Department argues that these measures⁣ are necessary to address⁤ the global ‌climate⁣ crisis. ⁣However, industry ⁢leaders ⁣and ⁤an Energy Department analysis‌ suggest ⁢that a significant portion of gas stoves ‍on the market would be affected by these restrictions.

Manchin has a history of changing his ‍positions ‌as elections approach. In the ⁤past, he has reversed ⁢his stance on issues like border walls. As‍ the political landscape evolves, it remains‌ to be seen how Manchin’s ‌positions will continue to shift.
