Senate‌ Republican Conference Chairman Endorses Trump,⁢ Becoming Highest-Ranking Senate Republican to Back Former President

Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) made a significant announcement on Tuesday, endorsing former⁤ President Donald Trump’s bid to return to Washington. This endorsement from Barrasso, the No. 3 Senate Republican, marks the highest-ranking support Trump has received from a Senate Republican.

In an appearance⁤ on Fox News, Barrasso stated, ”When President Trump was in office, we ‌had the best economy in my lifetime and most of our ⁤lifetimes, we⁤ had energy independence, our enemies feared us, and we had ⁢a secure border. Under Joe ⁢Biden, we have high prices, we have a wide open ‍border.”

Barrasso further‌ emphasized his belief in a conservative-led Senate partnership with Trump, stating, “President Trump⁤ and a new conservative-led ‌Senate partnership will restore American greatness. That means ‌putting freedom ahead of government power and economic strength over government subsidies. ‍It means putting affordable, available,⁢ reliable American energy‍ and American energy workers back on top.”

Previously, Trump’s top senatorial endorsement came from National Republican Senatorial ⁢Committee Chairman Steve ‌Daines (R-MT). Alongside Barrasso and Daines, a total of 20 GOP senators have endorsed ‍Trump in the Republican primary.

Senate‌ Minority Leader Mitch‍ McConnell (R-KY) has committed to not weighing in on⁣ the⁤ presidential primary this cycle, while Senate Minority Whip John‌ Thune (R-SD)⁢ initially endorsed Scott but is now staying out ⁤of the primary.

The Senate GOP conference consists of many establishment Republicans who value bipartisanship. Some ⁢of Trump’s GOP skeptics ⁤developed working relationships with him while he was in office.

Trump’s refusal to accept his ⁤2020 election loss and the ⁤resulting Capitol riot on January 6th strained his relationship with most Senate Republicans. Republicans also blamed Trump for⁢ their loss in the Georgia runoff races, ‍which led ⁤to‍ Democrats gaining control of the Senate.

Despite these‍ challenges, Trump remains the clear front-runner in the Republican primary field and is even‍ performing ahead of President Joe Biden in some general election polls.
