John Roberts’s World Series
Universes of Possibility
There are other universes where none of this is happening.
In alternate realities, John Roberts could be a wealthy lawyer on the verge of retirement, or he could have remained on the U.S. Court of Appeals or held a different position on the Supreme Court. There are even universes where Donald Trump never descended that infamous escalator, or where he lost to Ted Cruz or Hillary Clinton. In these parallel worlds, anything is possible, including a blizzard in Washington on January 6th or Trump deciding not to run for re-election in 2024.
But in our universe, the one we inhabit, everything unfolded as it did. And now Roberts, the man who dedicated his life to depoliticizing the Supreme Court, faces the most politically charged cases of his tenure as Chief Justice. The fate of Trump, Biden, the Republican Party, the 2024 election, the criminal justice system, and even the Supreme Court itself rests in his hands. Roberts may not have made a deal with the devil to reach his position, but the devil has come knocking nonetheless.
The Weight of Trump’s Cases
Roberts has presided over many controversial cases during his time as Chief Justice, but none have carried the same weight as the three appeals concerning Trump’s actions on January 6th. These cases not only challenge the sanctity of the Constitution but also question the legitimacy of the entire republic.
The least contentious of the three cases is Fischer v. United States, which deals with the obstruction of an official proceeding. While Trump’s name may not appear in this case, his involvement is undeniable. A ruling in Fischer’s favor could undermine the prosecution of Trump, potentially delaying his trial and granting him a political victory.
The second case, which has yet to reach Roberts, revolves around Trump’s claim to presidential immunity from prosecution. Even if the Supreme Court rules against Trump, they could still benefit him in other ways, such as delaying the trial or ruling narrowly on technical issues. However, any decision that postpones the trial would be seen as a victory for Trump and met with outrage from those eager to see him held accountable.
Roberts faces his biggest challenge with Trump’s appeal of the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision declaring him ineligible for the presidency under the 14th Amendment. This case carries immense consequences, as it questions whether a former president can stand for election and could potentially ignite chaos and violence. Roberts must navigate this ticking time bomb carefully, as his ruling will undoubtedly anger one side or the other.
The Dilemma of Ruling
Roberts finds himself caught between a rock and a hard place. Ruling against Trump would alienate conservatives who already distrust his efforts to depoliticize the Supreme Court. On the other hand, ruling in Trump’s favor would enrage the Left, who despise the Court and seek to destroy it.
Roberts must also consider the long-term implications of his decision. A ruling against Trump could set a dangerous precedent, allowing future presidents to be prosecuted and imprisoned by their successors. This could have dire consequences for the stability of the presidency and the country as a whole.
Ultimately, Roberts must weigh the potential fallout of his ruling. The Supreme Court’s credibility and authority are at stake, and any decision that undermines its legitimacy could lead to a breakdown of the entire electoral system. The solution may lie in leaving Section 3 of the 14th Amendment untouched, allowing the people to make their own decisions about Trump and avoiding further chaos.
Roberts, once compared to an umpire calling balls and strikes, now finds himself in the high-stakes game of the constitutional equivalent of Game 7 of the World Series. The outcome of these cases will shape his legacy and determine the future of the Supreme Court.

What potential consequences could Chief Justice Roberts face in terms of public perception and the integrity of the Supreme Court depending on his decisions in these cases?
His supporters, allowing him to maintain a level of influence and power within the political landscape.
The third and most significant case is the prosecution of Trump for incitement of insurrection. This case will determine whether Trump can be held criminally responsible for his role in the events of January 6th, when a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol with the intention of overturning the election results. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for the future of American democracy, as it will set a precedent for holding current and future presidents accountable for their actions.
The Political Minefield
Roberts finds himself in an unenviable position, caught in the middle of a political minefield. As Chief Justice, he is tasked with upholding the Constitution and ensuring the impartiality of the judiciary. However, in cases of such magnitude and political significance, it is nearly impossible to separate law from politics.
The decisions Roberts makes will have consequences that extend far beyond the courtroom. They will shape the narrative of Trump’s presidency, influence future elections, and impact the public’s perception of the Supreme Court’s integrity. The weight of these cases is not lost on Roberts, who knows that the eyes of the nation are upon him.
Roberts must navigate a highly polarized political climate, where both sides of the aisle are watching his every move. Conservatives expect him to protect Trump and preserve the power of the presidency, while liberals hope he will hold Trump accountable and defend democracy. The pressure is immense, and any decision he makes is bound to be scrutinized and dissected.
The Legacy of John Roberts
Roberts has long sought to depoliticize the Supreme Court and maintain its impartiality. He has consistently ruled against partisan interests, earning him praise from both sides of the political spectrum. However, these cases put his commitment to neutrality to the test.
If Roberts decides in favor of Trump, his legacy as a defender of the Constitution may be called into question. Critics will argue that he prioritized politics over the law, further eroding public trust in the judiciary. On the other hand, if he rules against Trump, he risks being accused of bias and becoming a target of conservative backlash.
Regardless of the outcome of these cases, Roberts is well aware that his decisions could shape the future of the Supreme Court and the country. He must carefully weigh the evidence, consider the legal precedents, and make a ruling that upholds the principles of justice and the integrity of the judiciary.
Conclusion
In the vast expanse of universes, the possibilities are endless. But in our universe, the one we perceive as reality, John Roberts faces an unprecedented challenge as Chief Justice. The weight of Trump’s cases rests heavily upon him, with the fate of the nation and the democratic process in the balance.
Roberts must navigate a treacherous path, balancing the law and politics, as he makes decisions that will shape the legacy of his tenure and the future of the Supreme Court. The world is watching, and the stakes could not be higher.
In these universes of possibility, anything can happen. But in our universe, it is Roberts who holds the power to shape history and determine the course of justice.
