John Thune details how Trump and Congress will get US ‘back on track’ after Biden
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) previewed what the first 100 days of the second Trump administration will focus on, specifically how Congress will work with President-elect Donald Trump to put the United States “back on track.”
Trump is expected to sign 10 executive orders specifically focused on the border as part of the 200 actions he will take within his first days in office. Thune, who has expressed enthusiasm to work with Trump to enact the president-elect’s vision for the country, stated that Trump’s executive actions will be in line with his agenda, which will focus on the border, the economy, and the cost of living.

“And that’s what the American people voted for. That’s why we had the huge mandate,” Thune said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom. “The president won a decisive mandate this fall, and he’s moving forward on implementing it. We want to do everything we can to be supportive and to be good partners as we move on an agenda that I think gets this country back on track, and we are desperately off track after the last four years.”
As part of this path to enact Trump’s agenda, Thune detailed the process needed to confirm Trump’s Cabinet nominees and the challenge that Democratic lawmakers pose in confirming them. The Senate majority leader noted how former President Barack Obama’s first 12 nominations were confirmed in 15 days compared to Trump’s nominees taking 43 days, with Thune calling for a return to “the Obama standard” and expressing hope Democrats can cooperate with the confirmation of Trump’s national security team.
When asked about resistance Trump could face from some Republican lawmakers, Thune cited how Trump spoke with party members who haven’t historically supported him on what he aims to focus on, which includes “energy dominance” in the U.S., as well as rebuilding the nation’s military. He added that while Republicans have “a lot to get done,” it is what voters want from the nation’s leadership and that Republicans intend to work with the president to achieve it.
Thune also addressed the challenge Trump faces with TikTok and its operations in the U.S., stating that Congress took action to ban the social media platform because “China is a threat” to the U.S. since the foreign country manipulates the platform’s algorithm on what viewers watch. Trump has proposed that TikTok remain operational in the U.S. if the country has 50% ownership of the platform, to which Thune argued that any plan would need to include “getting the majority control out of the hands of the Communist Party.”
Among the executive orders Trump plans to issue once he is inaugurated is declaring a national emergency at the border, which would allow the Defense Department to deploy active-duty and National Guard military to the southern border. Trump will also issue an order to start immediate removals of illegal immigrants and end birthright citizenship in the country.
