Tester supports banning dark money, but only if it benefits his own campaign
Shady Super PAC Meddling in Montana GOP Primary Bankrolled by Schumer Dark Money Group, Filings Show
Sen. Jon Tester (D., Mont.) is pushing for a constitutional amendment to eliminate dark money in elections. However, it turns out that a group aligned with Chuck Schumer, known for its dark money practices, is actually funding Tester’s own reelection campaign.
The Last Best Place PAC has managed to raise over $21 million since last September. Shockingly, nearly $6 million of that amount has been spent on television ads by the group to prevent Montana businessman Tim Sheehy from securing the Republican Senate nomination. Sheehy is seen as a stronger candidate compared to Rep. Matt Rosendale (R., Mont.), who is expected to announce his candidacy next month. It’s worth noting that Rosendale lost to Tester by a narrow margin in 2018.
All of Last Best Place PAC’s funds can be traced back to Majority Forward, a left-wing dark money group associated with Schumer’s Senate Majority PAC, as revealed by federal filings. Interestingly, these two groups share several senior employees.
This situation puts Tester in an awkward position, considering that just last month he publicly called for a constitutional amendment to remove unlimited dark money from elections. Tester is considered the most vulnerable Senate Democrat up for reelection in November and will likely rely on left-wing PACs’ financial support to secure his seat. It’s important to note that Montana has been a stronghold for former president Donald Trump, who won the state by significant margins in both 2016 and 2020.
Despite the revelations, Tester’s office has not provided any comment on the matter.
In a similar fashion, Schumer’s PAC spent millions of dollars in 2022 to support Republicans who were deemed more beatable by Democrats. This strategy proved successful in New Hampshire, where Republican Don Bolduc lost his bid to unseat Sen. Maggie Hassan (D.) by nearly 10 points after receiving over $3 million from Senate Majority PAC.
How has Tester benefited from dark money in politics, and what does this reveal about his true intentions and consistency?
Ate dark money in politics. However, recent revelations show that Tester has benefited from dark money himself, raising questions about his true intentions and consistency.
Dark money refers to undisclosed donations that are used to influence political campaigns. It allows wealthy individuals and corporations to exert their influence without transparency or accountability. Many believe that this undermines democracy and gives an unfair advantage to those with deep pockets.
Tester has positioned himself as a champion for campaign finance reform and has been vocal about the need to ban dark money. He argues that transparency is crucial in order to restore trust in the political process and ensure that elected officials are accountable to the people.
However, recent campaign finance filings have raised eyebrows. It has been revealed that a shady super PAC, operating in the Montana GOP primary, is being bankrolled by a dark money group with ties to Senator Chuck Schumer. This brings into question Tester’s true stance on dark money.
The filings show that the super PAC has received significant financial support from the Majority Forward group, a dark money organization affiliated with Schumer. This group has been criticized for its lack of transparency and its involvement in pushing a partisan agenda.
Interestingly, Tester has remained silent on the issue and has not condemned the involvement of dark money in his own campaign or in the Montana GOP primary. This raises concerns about his commitment to campaign finance reform and his willingness to tolerate dark money when it serves his own interests.
The hypocrisy of Tester’s position is evident. While he claims to be fighting against dark money, he is benefiting from it. This undermines his credibility as a champion for transparency and accountability in politics.
The role of dark money in elections is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed. It is crucial for politicians to take a consistent and principled stance on this matter. Tester’s actions, however, suggest that he is willing to use dark money when it suits him, which is a disservice to the voters.
If Tester genuinely believes in campaign finance reform and the elimination of dark money, he should publicly denounce the use of dark money in his own campaign and call for greater transparency. Only then can he regain the trust of voters who are tired of the influence of special interests in politics.
It is important that we hold our elected officials accountable and demand integrity in our political system. If dark money is to be banned, it should be done so without exceptions or double standards. Tester’s actions highlight the urgent need for comprehensive campaign finance reform that truly eliminates the influence of dark money in our elections.
