St. Louis Democrat abandons Senate race to challenge Josh Hawley.
St. Louis Prosecutor Wesley Bell Shifts Focus to Congressional Race, Challenging Rep. Cori Bush
St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell has made an exciting announcement: he is dropping his bid to unseat Sen. Josh Hawley in 2024 and instead will challenge Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri’s 1st Congressional District. This decision comes as Bush faces criticism for her remarks on Israel’s conflict with Hamas.
In an Oct. 30 post on X, Ms. Bush called on the U.S. government to “stop funding these atrocities against Palestinians.”

Last week, Bush was among just 10 House members who voted against a resolution expressing support for Israel and condemning Hamas’s terror attack. Bell stated, “St. Louis needs you in the House of Representatives,” and after careful consideration, he is formally withdrawing from the U.S. Senate race.
With Bell out of the Senate race, Hawley’s top challengers are U.S. Marine Corps reservist Lucas Kunce and state Sen. Karla May.
During a news conference, Bell criticized Bush’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict, emphasizing Israel’s right to defend itself. He stressed the importance of providing effective leadership in the face of a historic terrorist attack.
As a prosecutor, Bell has implemented significant changes to reduce the jail population and end prosecution of low-level marijuana crimes. Bush, along with other Democrats, has faced criticism for her views on Israel, with accusations of antisemitism directed at some members of Congress.
‘Disheartening’
Responding to Bell’s decision, Bush’s campaign described it as “disheartening.” They expressed disappointment that Bell chose to target Missouri’s first Black congresswoman instead of continuing his U.S. Senate campaign.
The campaign emphasized Bush’s bold, progressive vision and her clear mandate from the 2022 reelection. They stated that her focus remains on preventing extremism and advocating for critical resources for communities.
St. Louis is heavily Democratic, making the winner of the August primary the favorite to win in November. Currently, Bush and Bell are the only candidates in the race. Bush, a Black Lives Matter activist, gained prominence during the Ferguson protests and has been an advocate for reallocating funds from the police to social services.
How does Bell prioritize the rights and wellbeing of both Israelis and Palestinians in his approach to supporting Israel
Importance of maintaining a strong alliance with Israel and expressed his concern over Bush’s remarks, calling them misguided and detrimental to the relationship between the United States and Israel.
In his statement, Bell highlighted the need for a representative who understands the complexities of international conflicts and can navigate diplomatic relationships with tact and diplomacy. He emphasized that supporting Israel does not equate to disregarding the rights and wellbeing of Palestinians. Rather, it is about finding a long-term solution that ensures the safety and security of both Israelis and Palestinians.
Bell’s decision to shift his focus to the 1st Congressional District race reflects his commitment to serving the people of St. Louis County and advocating for their best interests. As the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney, he has proven his dedication to justice and the wellbeing of his community. By challenging Rep. Cori Bush, he aims to bring a fresh perspective to the table and work towards fostering a more inclusive and constructive dialogue on international affairs.
Reactions to Bell’s decision have been mixed, with some praising his willingness to take a stand on important issues, while others criticize it as opportunistic and politically motivated. However, Bell remains firm in his conviction that the challenges facing the country today require strong and informed leadership, and he believes he can offer that in the 1st Congressional District race.
Having previously shown an interest in national politics by announcing his bid to unseat Sen. Josh Hawley in 2024, Bell’s decision to redirect his efforts towards the congressional race showcases his adaptability and willingness to reassess his priorities based on the current political landscape. This highlights Bell’s strategic thinking and his ability to gauge and respond to the needs of his constituency in a rapidly changing political climate.
As the campaign for the 1st Congressional District seat gains momentum, it will undoubtedly be closely watched by both the local and national political spheres. Bell’s entry into the race adds another layer of competitiveness and intrigue, as his impressive track record as a prosecutor precedes him. This leaves voters with a choice between two strong candidates, each offering their unique perspectives and vision for the future.
As the race unfolds, it will be interesting to see how Bell’s focus on international affairs and his criticism of Bush’s stance on Israel resonate with voters in the 1st Congressional District. Ultimately, it will be the decision of the constituents to determine who they believe can best represent their interests and effectively navigate the complex challenges facing the nation and its relationship with Israel.
Regardless of the outcome, Bell’s decision to shift his focus to the 1st Congressional District race demonstrates his unwavering commitment to public service and his determination to make a positive impact on his community. By offering an alternative perspective and engaging in thoughtful debates on pressing issues, Bell seeks to contribute to the democratic process and shape the future of his district and the country as a whole.
