Judge Delays Start Of Fox News-Dominion Defamation Trial
The start of the Fox News – Dominion slander test, which was set to begin on Monday in Wilmington, may be postponed by one more time, Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis announced late on Sunday.
In a speech made public on Sunday evening, Davis stated that” The Court has decided to continue the start of the trial, including jury selection, until Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at 9:00 am. I did make such an announcement tomorrow at 9:00 am in Courtroom 7E.”
The decision was made shortly after a statement from The Wall Street Journal suggested that the system may be looking to make an impromptu settlement, though the jury did not provide any details as to why the test was being delayed. Past attempts to resolve the dispute had failed.
The Washington Post noted that the delay appeared to be a move intended” to allow both parties to hold conversations about the possibility of settlement ,” and in its report on Sunday, it was suggested that might be the direction things were headed.
Dominion Voting Systems is suing Fox News for$ 1.6 billion in damages after claiming that executives allowed anchors to continue making the claims even after they knew they were untrue. They allege that the network gave anchormen permission to perpetuate claims that they assisted in rigging the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in President Joe Biden’s’s favor.
The proceedings are anticipated to last about six weeks if the case goes as planned starting on Tuesday, and the result may have a significant impact on how the general public perceives the media.
In some ways, it’s’s just another instance of litigation for a sizable sum of money, but it also differs from any case you’ve’ve seen before, Victoria Baranetsky, general counsel at the Center for Investigative Reporting, said, weighing the future of Fox News, what is permissible for what reporters can trust, and what will happen to public trust in the media. The stakes are high in those situations.
