Judge in Trump election case previously employed at same law firm as Hunter Biden.
The federal judge assigned to special counsel Jack Smith‘s January 6 case against former President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., worked in the same law firm that once employed Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.
After being randomly selected to oversee the case after a grand jury indicted Trump on four charges over an alleged effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan’s resume and record quickly began to draw attention, similar to what happened with the Florida-based judge presiding over Smith’s other, documents-focused case against Trump.
The Associated Press has described Chutkan as the “toughest punisher” of Capitol riot defendants over the prison sentences she has meted out. The judge also made headlines in 2021 with a ruling against Trump’s efforts to stop the January 6 Committee from obtaining White House records, writing, “Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.”
An Obama appointee who was confirmed by the Senate in a 95-0 vote in 2014, Chutkan submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee during the nomination process that showed she had worked at the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner LLP since 2002.
Hunter Biden — who himself is facing a federal criminal inquiry — worked at the same firm as an attorney from 2009 to 2014, as shown by Open Secrets, but as The New York Post reported, it is unclear whether Chutkan interacted with him during the period they overlapped. In addition, records show she donated to the campaigns of former President Barack Obama and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) while employed by the firm.
“The Swamp is real,” Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) said in a post to X. He was responding to a post by Monica Crowley, a Trump-era Treasury official who highlighted Chutkan’s ties to Obama and Hunter Biden, commenting, “This is the level of contempt they have for the Constitution, the rule of law – and YOU.”
Trump, who is expected to be arraigned on Thursday, has been charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstructing an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
Now facing indictments in three cases, with another possibly to come in Georgia, Trump claims politically motivated forces are targeting him across multiple investigations as he campaigns as the GOP frontrunner in the 2024 race for the White House.
“This is nothing more than the latest corrupt chapter in the continued pathetic attempt by the Biden Crime Family and their weaponized Department of Justice to interfere with the 2024 Presidential Election, in which President Trump is the undisputed frontrunner, and leading by substantial margins,” said a statement from Trump’s campaign on Tuesday.
