Judge denies Biden’s request to contact social media companies.
A Victory for Free Speech: Judge Denies Biden Administration’s Request to Contact Social Media Companies
In a significant blow to President Joe Biden‘s administration, a federal judge has firmly denied their request for a stay on his own order that prohibits the administration from social media companies: Report”>contacting social media companies.
“Evidence of a massive effort by Defendants, from the White House to federal agencies, to suppress speech based on its content.”
U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty, who rejected the request on Monday, has made it clear that members of the Biden administration cannot communicate with social media companies until the case has been appealed.
A Stand Against Censorship
Judge Doughty initially issued the order after carefully examining what he described as “evidence of a massive effort” by the administration to suppress speech based on its content. On July 4th, he ruled that many individuals within the Biden administration, including key players in the White House and top federal agencies, would be prohibited from meeting or communicating with social media companies.
This injunction specifically targets White House officials like Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, as well as certain agencies and officials from the Homeland Security Department, the Health and Human Services Department, the DOJ, and the FBI.
However, exceptions will be made for law enforcement agencies in contact social media companies.”>cases involving criminal behavior, national security concerns, and potential election tampering.
A Battle for Free Expression
The Biden administration wasted no time in responding to the judge’s decision, vowing to appeal the ruling. They filed the notice on July 5th and requested a stay in the meantime.
The initial case, brought forward by the attorneys general of Louisiana and Missouri, accuses the federal government of colluding with social media companies to censor what they consider to be “disfavored speech.”
Judge Doughty, appointed by former President Donald Trump, seems to align with the attorneys general’s concerns and has taken a firm stance against potential censorship.
