Fulton County Judge to Preside Over Trial of Former President Donald Trump
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, appointed just six months ago by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, will preside over the highly-scrutinized trial of former President Donald Trump and his allies regarding their actions during the 2020 election.
McAfee, 34, obtained his law degree from the University of Georgia and has an impressive background. He previously worked as the Peach State’s inspector general under Kemp and also served under Democrat Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
During his time with the Fulton County District Attorney’s office, McAfee worked in the complex trial division, handling homicide prosecutions. He later became a federal prosecutor in the Northern District of Georgia, focusing on major drug trafficking investigations.
McAfee’s appointment as Georgia’s inspector general further solidified his reputation as a tough prosecutor, equipped to seek out fraud, waste, abuse, and corruption.
In December 2022, McAfee was appointed to the Fulton County Superior Court, where he made headlines by holding pro-Trump attorney Lin Wood in contempt of court and ordering him to pay a fine.
McAfee’s experience extends beyond his legal career. He interned for former Georgia Supreme Court Judges David Nahmias and Keith Blackwell, both appointed by Republicans. He was also actively involved in organizations such as the Federalist Society and Law Republicans while in law school.
Despite facing trials in multiple states, including New York, Florida, and Washington, D.C., former President Trump has decried the prosecution and vowed to present evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 election.
