Julia Roberts under fire for ad inviting women to vote differently from husbands – Washington Examiner
Julia Roberts is facing criticism for her involvement in a campaign ad that encourages women to vote independently of their husbands. The ad, created by the progressive evangelical group Vote Common Good, features a woman who looks back at her husband while heading to cast her vote. As she chooses a candidate, she reassures her husband that she made the “right choice.” The voice-over by Roberts emphasizes that women have the right to vote as they wish, with no one knowing their choice. Critics argue the ad is condescending and demeaning to married women, expressing disappointment at Roberts’ participation. The ad’s release comes just days before Election Day, reflecting high stakes for both campaigns trying to sway voters.
Julia Roberts under fire for ad inviting women to vote differently from husbands
Actress Julia Roberts voiced a campaign ad that is under fire, as some have said it is condescending to married women.
There are only five days left until Election Day, with both campaigns feeling immense pressure for every final strategy they implement to win over voters. Progressive evangelical group Vote Common Good attempted to help Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid with an ad that was poorly received by some.
The ad includes a woman wearing an American flag hat who looks sheepishly back at her husband as she heads to a voting booth. She is seen marking the Harris-Walz option and smiling at another woman voting. Then, her husband asks her if she made the “right choice,” to which she responds, “Sure did, honey.”
“In the one place in America where women still have a right to choose, you can vote any way you want, and no one will ever know,” Roberts says in a voice-over. “Remember, what happens in the booth stays in the booth.”
“This is insulting and degrading to women. Do you even hear yourselves? Very disappointing @JuliaRoberts,” the group Pennsylvania Women for Change wrote.
“I can tell you I made my own mind up about who to vote for and my husband knows. We discuss — we don’t tell each other how to vote,” another user wrote. “This ad in itself would almost make me vote for Trump.”
Still, others saw no problem with the ad.
“What an incredible ad. So very well done,” one user commented.
Harris has leaned heavily on celebrity endorsements since launching her campaign in July. Artists Lizzo, Beyonce, and Cardi B have made appearances at her rallies, but not all of them have made musical performances. Others, such as Taylor Swift, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jane Fonda, have offered simple endorsements without stumping for the vice president.
President Joe Biden was running for reelection until July, when he announced he would end his campaign. Immediately, Biden endorsed Harris, as she is the sole candidate who can legally use what Biden fundraised.
