Jury Finds Gwyneth Paltrow Not Responsible For Injuries Caused By 2016 Ski Crash
A jury has found that actress Gwyneth Paltrow is not responsible for the injuries sustained by Terry Sanderson, a retired optometrist, in a 2016 ski collision in Utah. The jury instead found Sanderson to be at fault in the crash and accepted Paltrow’s demand for $1 in damages from Sanderson’s countersuit. The trial began on March 21, and it took the jury just three hours to reach a verdict.
In Sanderson’s lawsuit, he claimed that Paltrow was skiing behind him on the slope and collided with him after turning to watch her children. Sanderson’s attorney stated that Paltrow then screamed before crashing into Sanderson’s back, knocking him over and rendering him unconscious. Following the incident, Paltrow allegedly departed the scene, leaving Sanderson lying injured in the snow.
Sanderson was later treated in an emergency room for a concussion and four broken ribs. His ski companion testified that he saw Paltrow collide with Sanderson and knock him over. Sanderson’s lawsuit claimed that he suffered permanent damage as a result of the collision.
Paltrow’s attorneys argued that it was Sanderson who had collided with the actress and not the other way around. One of her lawyers stated that Paltrow was struck so suddenly that she initially believed she was being attacked. After the crash, Sanderson had asked, “Who ran into who?” and then apologized to Paltrow after she said that he had crashed into her. Members of Paltrow’s group stated they checked on Sanderson after the accident and that he said he was okay. They said Paltrow only skied away after Sanderson stated that he was okay and ski patrol left.
