Jussie Smollett Special Prosecutor Referring Kim Foxx To Illinois Attorney Registration For Ethic Violations, False Statements

On Monday, Illinois Judge Michael Toomin allowed for the release of a 60-page report regarding Illinois’ Cook County Attorney Kim Foxx’s mishandling of the Jussie Smollett hate crime hoax case. That report found major failures and potential ethics violations over false statements given by Foxx to authorities regarding the investigation. In 2019, Foxx initially dropped all charges against the now-convicted hate crime hoaxer who claimed he was attacked on a January night by two MAGA supporters hurling racial and homophobic slurs.

WTTW reported that Special Prosecutor Dan Webb compiled the report as part of orders from Toomin, who appointed “Webb as the special prosecutor in this case after Foxx’s office dismissed an initial set of 16 criminal charges against Smollett, who was accused of orchestrating a hoax hate crime against himself in Chicago in January 2019.”

“Webb was tasked both with reinvestigating the Smollett case and with determining whether Foxx or any other person or office involved in the case ‘engaged in improper conduct or committed any criminal offenses,” the local channel explained.

Webb’s report found “substantial abuses” a “major failure of operations” committed by Foxx’s office, but stopped short of saying there was any criminal behavior:

“Specifically, the (Office of the Special Prosecutor) also explicitly asked 37 interviewees who could potentially have information about criminal activity by the (Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office) if they were aware of any actions by anyone at the (office) that might constitute criminal conduct,” Webb’s team said in the report. “Across the board, everyone asked responded that they were not aware of any potential criminal conduct.”

Following the release of the report Monday morning, Fox News’ Matt Finn reported that former Judge Sheila O’Brien issued a statement saying that “Kim Foxx is a liar and should resign.” As pointed out by Finn, O’Brien successfully filed the motion for the special prosecutor in the Smollett case which led to the actor being re-charged after Foxx’s office dropped the initial investigation

“Kim Foxx should resign,” O’Brien said. “This report shows she is a liar, that her administration is in chaos, and that she’s blaming everyone else. She should resign. taxpayers deserve better.”

Despite the Smollett controversy, Foxx won re-election in 2020. Finn also reported that Webb said he would be “referring Kim Foxx and attorneys to Illinois Attorney registration – for potential ethics violations by making false and misleading statements in Smollett case.”
