Kamala Harris gives supporters one final word salad
In a speech to young Democratic leaders in Maryland, Vice President Kamala harris encouraged her supporters to remain motivated and engaged despite feelings of defeat following her recent electoral loss to President-elect Donald Trump.during her remarks, she acknowledged the disappointment expressed by constituents through letters and personal conversations, urging them not to succumb to resignation. Harris emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating that the fight must continue for an economy that benefits all Americans, not just the wealthy. While she refrained from naming Trump directly, her message was a rallying cry for Democrats facing a future where the GOP will dominate the White House and Congress. Harris’s address aimed to inspire renewed activism and commitment within the party, contrasting the current subdued response to Trump’s victory with the more vigorous mobilization seen after his 2016 election.
Kamala Harris urges ‘tired’ Democratic youth to ‘stay in the fight’
Vice President Kamala Harris implored fellow Democrats devastated by her electoral loss to President-elect Donald Trump last month not to give into nihilism during remarks to young leaders in Maryland.
After thanking the crowd of supporters for their work during the campaign, Harris mentioned the thousands of letters she had received and the in-person comments from disappointed voters whom she urged not to give up.
“As we approach the end of this year, many people have come up to me telling me they feel tired, maybe even resigned. Folks have said to me that they’re not sure whether they have the strength, much less the desire to stay in the fight,” said Harris, who was also joined at the event by Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD), Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, and Sen.-elect Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD) in Prince George’s County.
BIDEN TO USE LAME-DUCK SESSION TO ‘TRUMP-PROOF’ LEGACY
“But let me be very clear, no one can’t walk away,” Harris continued. “We must stay in the fight. Every one of us. Including the fight for an economy that works not just for those at the very top but for working people — for all Americans.”
Harris did not mention Trump directly by name, but her speech comes on the same day the Electoral College in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., votes to confirm his victory.
After he is sworn into office on Jan. 20, the GOP will control the White House and the House and Senate and have a 6-3 Republican-appointed majority on the Supreme Court, effectively boxing out Democrats from power.
Democrats have reacted in a much less fervent action to Trump’s second win than his surprise victory in 2016 when activists mobilized quickly to thwart his agenda.
Harris sought to reenergize her party members by claiming the nation should remain united irrespective of who is in power.
“You reflect the best of the America I have seen, be it during the campaign, during my four years as vice president, and throughout my life,” Harris said.
“We all have so much more in common than what separates us, that is our knowledge,” Harris continued before taking a subtle shot at Trump. “An America where we are guided by the ideals that have always defined us when we are at our best: dignity and decency, fairness, freedom and opportunity for all. An America where we recognize that the true measure of the strength of a leader is not based on who you beat down. It’s based on who you lift up.”
The crowd erupted in clapping at her comments.
HOW KAMALA HARRIS PLOWED THROUGH $1 BILLION
As the nation prepares for the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays, the vice president reminded Democrats to rest before preparing for a second Trump administration.
Harris also took a moment to reference a popular phrase of hers that had excited the Democratic base when she replaced President Joe Biden as the nominee but was panned by critics as a word salad.
“As we close out this year, I ask of you this, that those here and anyone watching that you will not walk away, that you will stay true to your spirit and your sense of purpose, that you will continue to fight for the promise of America. And I ask you to remember the context in which you exist.”
“Yeah, I did that,” Harris said afterward as the crowd laughed at her comments.
“I ask you to remember that this struggle is not new. It goes back to nearly 250 years to Lexington and Concord,” Harris continued.
The fight, Harris said, belongs to young leaders who are “its heirs.”
It’s unclear what Harris’s post-White House plans are, but there are reports she could run for California governor in 2026, seek the White House again in 2028, or become a private citizen.
“Get some rest over the holidays, and spend time with the people you love,” Harris concluded. “I challenge you to come back ready. Ready to chart our path to the future. Chin up, shoulders back, forever impatient for change.”
