‌ What are⁢ some of ⁢the legal arguments being made to disqualify former President Donald Trump ‍from appearing on state ballots in the next election?

JOHN HINES,‌ OAN CORRESPONDENT:‌ Thank you for joining us.⁢ I’m ⁣John Hines in Washington, and we continue our‌ conversation now with counsel for ‍the National Legal and Policy ⁢Center, ‌Paul Kamenar. And Paul, in⁢ our last segment, we⁤ were talking‍ about efforts in the states to disqualify former President Donald ‍Trump from appearing on state ballots ‍in the next election. You⁢ mentioned that there are various⁢ legal arguments being ⁤made. Can you give us a brief overview of‍ some of ‍those ⁤arguments?

PAUL KAMENAR, COUNSEL FOR NATIONAL LEGAL AND POLICY⁤ CENTER: Yes,⁢ John. There are several legal ‍arguments being made to⁢ disqualify former President Trump. One argument is that he‍ incited an insurrection on ‍January‌ 6th, 2021, which goes against the‍ principles of⁣ our democracy. Another argument is that‌ he violated the emoluments clause of‌ the Constitution by profiting from foreign governments while in office.⁣ Additionally, there ⁢are arguments being made‍ based on his handling⁤ of the⁣ COVID-19 pandemic and his alleged obstruction of⁣ justice during the Mueller investigation.

JOHN HINES: And Paul, what is the likelihood that these efforts will be ⁢successful?

PAUL KAMENAR: It ⁢is difficult to say ‌for ⁣certain, but⁢ it is possible that the Supreme Court could ‍expedite these cases and make a decision before the next election. The Court has the authority to hear ‌cases that involve federal ⁣constitutional issues, and these arguments certainly fall under that category. If the Court ⁤were to rule in favor of disqualifying President Trump, it would set a‌ precedent for future cases involving the ‌eligibility of candidates for public office.

JOHN HINES: What impact could this have‌ on the ‌political landscape?

PAUL KAMENAR: The potential disqualification of a former president from appearing on state ballots would undoubtedly have a significant impact on the political landscape. It would send a clear ⁣message that certain actions or behavior by an individual can disqualify them from running⁤ for‍ public‌ office, ‍regardless⁣ of their previous status. This could lead to a ⁤more stringent vetting process for candidates⁢ and‍ a heightened sense‌ of accountability for ⁢those in positions of power.

JOHN HINES: Thank you, ‍Paul, for sharing your insights⁤ with‌ us. ⁣We appreciate your time.

PAUL KAMENAR: Thank you, John. It was my pleasure.

JOHN⁢ HINES: That was Paul Kamenar, counsel for the National Legal and Policy ‌Center, discussing the state-level legal efforts to keep former President Donald⁣ Trump off state ballots in the next election. Reporting from Washington, I’m John Hines,⁤ One America News.
