Kansas Lawmakers Override Governor, Banning Trans Athletes From Women’s Sports

TOPEKA, Kan.- The Kansas Senate and House safely overrode Gov. on Wednesday to resurrect a bill prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in women’s’s sports. The filibuster of Laura Kelly.
In the Senate, lawmakers voted 28 to reverse the governor’s’s veto of House Bill 2238, and on Wednesday morning, the House approved 84 – 40 to do the same. The legislation goes into effect on July 1.
According to the proposed legislation, state athletic teams from kindergarten through college would have to be classified as either” male ,”” female” or” coed or mixed.” The Fairness in Women Sports Act, which supporters claim may level the playing field for female athletes, is established by the plan.
Soon after overriding the governor’s’s filibuster in the House, House Republican officials issued the following statement on Wednesday morning:
The Fairness in Women’s’s Sports Act mandates that only medically female customers be on female college athletic teams in order to protect the rights of female sports in the state. House Republicans are committed to upholding the intent of Title IX as a whole.

After voting to pass the bill 82 to 40 in February, House lawmakers were able to secure the two vote required to reverse the governor’s’s reject.
The bill passed the Senate last month 28-11. Republicans needed 27 votes in the Senate to override the governor’s veto.
During discussions and sessions, the proposition generated discussion. The bill’s’s detractors claim that it targets Kansas’ trans place.

Three trans ladies, two of whom were elderly, participated in gymnastics this year in grades 7 through 12, according to the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
