Democrat Governor Laura Kelly (D-Kan.) announced on Tuesday, that ⁣she has ⁣stopped the production of the‍ new license plates after receiving backlash of the new navy blue and deep gold design.

The new design was gold with a navy stripe across‌ the top, navy numbers and no art, while the old plate had navy letters and numbers, and featured an embossed representation of ‍the state seal⁤ in ⁢white.

However, according to the state Department of Revenue,⁢ the old plates⁣ have‌ worn down over the years which is making it difficult for law enforcement to read.

A new state law ⁤that⁤ started in March required motorists to buy a ⁤new plate for 50 cents when they renewed their vehicle’s annual registration. To avoid using the new ⁤plate, drivers would have had to ⁢opt for a specialized one and pay an ⁤extra $45.

The governor initially praised⁢ the new design as optimism for the Sunflower State.

Kris ⁢Kobach (R-Kan.), the state’s Republican attorney general, tweeted that the design closely resembled a New York license plate as “Empire Gold.”

The Kansas Reflector’s opinion editor deemed it ⁣“ugly as sin” in a column under a headline calling it “slapdash and dull.”

“I’ve heard ‌you loud and clear,” Kelly said in a statement issued Tuesday by her office.⁤ “Elected officials ⁣should ⁤be responsive to their ⁤constituents.”

What were the ⁤main reasons behind the negative ‍reception of Kansas’ new license plate design?

“The Controversy Surrounding‍ Kansas’ New License ⁣Plates”

The state of Kansas recently found ‌itself embroiled in controversy after its plans to roll ⁢out new license plates⁣ were met with criticism ⁤from its residents. Democrat Governor Laura Kelly made⁢ the decision to halt production of the new plates in response to the‌ backlash. ‍The⁣ design, featuring a⁣ navy blue and deep‌ gold color scheme, was widely panned by Kansans.

The old plates, which featured⁤ navy letters and numbers with an embossed representation of the state seal in white, had become worn down over the years. This ‌deterioration posed a challenge for law enforcement officers attempting to‌ read the plates. As a solution to this problem, a new state law‌ introduced in March required motorists to purchase the new plates for ‌just 50 cents when renewing their vehicle’s⁤ annual registration. ‌Drivers could choose to opt for a specialized plate with an additional cost of $45 to avoid using the new design.

Initially, Governor ⁤Kelly had hailed the new design as⁢ a symbol of optimism for the Sunflower State. However, criticism quickly emerged, with Republican Attorney General Kris ⁢Kobach comparing the design to the “Empire Gold” color seen on ⁤New York license plates. The Kansas Reflector’s opinion editor also ⁢described the design as “ugly as sin” in a⁣ scathing column.

In response to ⁢the widespread negative ‌feedback, Governor Kelly ‌expressed her commitment to being responsive to her constituents. She⁢ announced‌ the ⁣decision to halt production ⁣and promised a public vote to determine among various possible designs.

The controversy surrounding the new ⁢license plates serves as a reminder of the importance of public opinion in the decision-making process. While the intention behind the design may have been optimistic, it is clear ⁣that the reception among Kansans ⁢did⁤ not match⁢ this sentiment. As the state ⁢revisits its plans, it is hoped that a design can be chosen that will be more widely accepted by the residents of Kansas.

In ‌conclusion, the state of Kansas has paused the production⁤ of its new⁢ license plates due to⁢ criticism from its residents.‍ The ‍navy blue⁤ and deep gold design‍ did not resonate well with the public, leading Governor Kelly to promise ⁣a public vote ⁢on alternative designs. This controversy highlights‍ the significance of considering public opinion when making decisions that‍ affect the population.
