Kaptur faces challenge for vulnerable seat from Air Force veteran

Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), who narrowly won reelection in 2024 by less than 1%, is being challenged by Alea Nadeem, an Air Force veteran running on the Republican ticket.

Nadeem posted her campaign announcement video on X Thursday, railing against Kaptur for being “a career politician” who is “out of touch” with the needs and concerns of Northwest Ohioans.

Nadeem highlighted her 21-year career in the Air Force. She holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

“In the military, our focus is on getting results,” Nadeem wrote on X. “I’ll fight for Ohio’s factories, farms, and families, along with President Trump’s America First policies that will protect the American Dream for future generations.”

In an interview with Fox News, Nadeem said it was time for Kaptur, who has been in Congress since 1983, to  “pass the torch.”

“Everyone has been like, ‘It’s enough,’” Nadeem told the outlet. “We get it, 43 years. So I think they’re looking for the next guardian to be able to do that. Someone they can trust. And I’m really hoping to step into that.”

Kaptur beat Republican candidate Derek Merrin, who was backed by President Donald Trump, in 2024 by about 2,300 votes. Trump won Kaptur’s congressional district and carried Ohio, a competitive swing state.

Cook Political Report labeled Kaptur’s seat a Democratic-leaning toss-up.

Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee has struggled with internal division, as Vice Chairman David Hogg said he would donate money to younger candidates in safe blue seats who would challenge older incumbents.

Chairman Ken Martin denounced Hogg’s plan, saying he risks losing his position. However, he told the Washington Examiner that he has no “intention” to force him out.

“No DNC officer should ever attempt to influence the outcome of a primary election, whether on behalf of an incumbent or a challenger,” Martin said. “Voters should decide who our primary nominees are, not DNC leadership. Our role is to serve as stewards of a fair, open, and trusted process, not to tilt the scales.”
