Kari Lake’s legal team fined $122,200 in sanctions.
The attorneys and legal firms for Kari Lake, the Republican nominee in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election, have been hit with a hefty sanction. According to a ruling by U.S. District Judge John J. Tuchi, they are required to pay $122,200 to Maricopa County. This decision comes as a blow to Lake’s campaign.
In the ruling, Judge Tuchi specifically named the individuals and firms responsible for the sanctions. Andrew D. Parker, the law firm of Parker Daniels Kibort LLC, Kurt B. Olsen, and the law firm of Olsen Law PC are jointly and severally liable for the fees. Notably, renowned attorney Alan M. Dershowitz is also held liable, but to a lesser extent, up to $12,220.
The deadline for payment is set at 30 days from the date of the ruling.
Within the 26-page ruling, available in pdf format, Judge Tuchi thoroughly examined Dershowitz’s involvement in the case. While Dershowitz claimed to be a consultant, the judge disagreed, acknowledging his limited role but still holding him partially responsible.
Another significant aspect of the ruling is the amount of the sanctions imposed. Initially, Maricopa County requested $139,950, but Judge Tuchi reduced it to $122,200, considering some duplications and lack of specificity in the county’s list of items.
Furthermore, Judge Tuchi emphasized that this ruling aims to discourage future copycat cases. He stated, “Failing to impose meaningful sanctions here might very well encourage others to follow suit by lending their credibility to documents filed in court without facing any real consequence if their certifications prove hollow or incomplete. The need for general deterrence is therefore significant.”
Both Dershowitz and Parker have expressed their intention to appeal the ruling, asserting their innocence. Dershowitz, in particular, stated, “I did absolutely nothing wrong. I’ve been consulting on constitutional issues for 50 years based on the advice of leading ethics lawyers and litigators. If the judge had assessed me $1, I would have appealed. I will take the case to the Supreme Court.”
The Epoch Times reached out to Kari Lake and Kurt B. Olsen for their comments on the ruling.
Kari Lake’s Election Case
Kari Lake, a former television news anchor, and Mark Finchem, a former Arizona state representative, filed a lawsuit in April 2022 against former Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs and officials in Maricopa and Pima counties. Their objective was to challenge the state’s and counties’ voting procedures.
The complaint was signed by Alan Dershowitz, Andrew D. Parker, and Kurt B. Olsen. However, Dershowitz argued that he was merely advising Lake, Finchem, and their team in a limited capacity. He claimed to have been paid for only a few hours of work.
