Ken Martin targets labor in first trip as DNC chairman
Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin is hoping to win back labor with his first trip since being elected to the position.
Martin will begin his trip with a stop in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, followed by stops in Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri, as part of the Democratic Party‘s efforts to rebuild after bruising defeats in last year’s elections, highlighted by key GOP gains with working-class voters. The newly elected DNC chairman, who has served as the chairman of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party since 2011, stressed the importance of hitting the road in a statement Monday.
“It’s time for the DNC to get out of D.C. — that means getting out of our comfort zone, having tough but honest conversations with voters, and showing that we’re willing to fight for people,” Martin said. “Democrats will win by organizing everywhere, competing across the ballot in every community, and uniting working families from all backgrounds.”
One key focus will be on winning back working-class voters after Democrats, who are traditionally seen as the working-class party, bled support from the key group in President Donald Trump’s decisive victories across the swing states in the 2024 election.
A CNN exit poll from the 2024 election found that Trump won 45% of union households, an improvement from his 40% mark with union households per a 2020 CNN exit poll. Trump made a major push for union voters and got a key victory when the International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a candidate for the first time since 1996. The union had supported the Democratic candidate from 2000 to 2020, but internal polling of Teamsters members showed Trump beating then-Vice President Kamala Harris, 58%-31%.
Trump’s pick for labor secretary, former Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, has been viewed as a union-friendly selection. Chavez-DeRemer has yet to go through the Senate confirmation process but is expected to in the coming weeks.
With Republican inroads with unions, Martin issued a lengthy memorandum ahead of his trip calling on Democrats to remind voters they are the working-class party.
“So, as the Trump agenda fails our nation’s working communities, we have to take seriously the job of repairing and restoring the perceptions of our party and our brand. It’s time to remind working Americans — and also show them every day — that the Democratic Party always has been and always will be the party of the worker,” Martin said.
He used the memo to rail against Trump’s policies, outlining how he believes they are harmful to unions and take sides with billionaires, rather than the working class.
“As Democrats, it is our responsibility to stand up for working people and unite behind the kitchen table issues that connect us all. As I take over as Chair of the DNC, union workers and labor leaders will be core to my decision-making,” Martin said in the memo.
“As Trump wages his war on working families, Democrats will fiercely answer the call to my favorite old union song, ‘Which Side Are You On?’ I’ll tell you what: Democrats are on the side of the worker. We will show Americans every day that workers in fact do have more power than any billionaire,” he added.
