Ken Paxton’s lawyers seek dismissal of all impeachment charges.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Attorneys Move to Dismiss Articles of Impeachment
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s attorneys are taking action to dismiss all articles of impeachment against him. The motions were filed before the deadline on Saturday and have now been made public. This move comes as Paxton’s attorneys accuse the House impeachment managers of attempting to subvert democracy and overturn the will of voters.
Challenging the Impeachment Process
Paxton’s attorneys have gone a step further by moving to dismiss the entire impeachment. They have also filed individual motions to dismiss specific articles of impeachment. One such filing challenges the article that deals with asking the state government to pay for Paxton’s whistleblower settlement. The attorneys argue that this is a routine function of his job and impeaching him over it is a violation of democracy.
The House impeachment managers will have until Aug. 15 to respond in writing to each motion. After that, the motions will be brought to the Senate for a vote. This gives the Republican-dominated Senate a second chance to reject Paxton’s impeachment, with only 16 of the 19 Republican votes needed.
Accusations and Allegations
Paxton is facing impeachment over accusations of bribery, obstruction of justice, and misappropriation of public resources. These allegations stem from whistleblower claims regarding misconduct in an investigation involving a friend and political donor of the attorney general.
Both the motions to dismiss individual articles and to dismiss the impeachment entirely will be voted on, shaping the future of Paxton’s political career.
