Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) called on his fellow senators to nominate President Donald Trump‘s Cabinet nominees despite some being “a little bit unusual.”
The Senate unanimously confirmed Secretary of State Marco Rubio and then confirmed CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, followed by a narrow confirmation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, which required Vice President JD Vance to be the tiebreaker. On Fox News’s Fox and Friends, Kennedy predicted all of Trump’s choices would be confirmed because Trump is “dug in like a tick” on his choices.
“We have got a lot of frustrated ex-class presidents. They’re very high-strung. They love drama. They could make a valium nervous,” Kennedy said of his fellow lawmakers in Washington, D.C. “You have to discount all that drama. I’m a Republican. My president is a Republican. There’s presumption in favor of his nominees.”
“President Trump has added a little spice to the equation. Some of his nominees are a little bit unusual. Like him, they play outside the pocket. So naturally, senators are going to have questions,” Kennedy went on. “The one that’s most on the bubble, as you know as well as I do, is Tulsi Gabbard.
Gabbard is Trump’s pick to be the director of national intelligence. Senators are expected to grill the former representative on her opinions regarding the Assad family, which had been head of Syria’s government for over 50 years until last year, among other controversies. Her hearing is scheduled for Jan. 30.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said the chamber is ahead of schedule to confirm the entire Cabinet in 15 days.
