Kentucky Attorney General Criticizes Biden Administration’s Handling of Fentanyl Crisis
Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron has voiced his concerns over the Biden administration’s inadequate response to the fentanyl crisis in the United States and at the southern border. In a letter addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Cameron urged the administration to take stronger actions against China and Mexican cartels, who have historically been responsible for smuggling fentanyl into the country. Cameron held Blinken accountable for the lenient policies that have allowed the national drug crisis to escalate to epidemic proportions.
Trump Administration’s Efforts Wasted
“This is exactly the kind of effort the Trump Administration began and that you have wasted,” Cameron wrote in his letter.
The Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy has reported that 73% of overdose deaths in 2021 were caused by fentanyl, surpassing the national rate of 67%.
In his letter, Cameron proposed several recommendations to the State Department. He called for international pressure on China to halt the export of precursor chemicals used in fentanyl production, the inclusion of all precursors on China’s list of controlled drugs to prevent their shipment, and the designation of Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
“Designating cartels as FTOs will give state and federal law enforcement agencies increased powers to freeze cartel assets, deny cartel members entry to America, and allow prosecutors to pursue tougher punishments against those who provide material support to the cartels,” Cameron explained.
According to the Kentucky attorney general, a group of 21 attorneys general had previously urged Blinken to declare Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations in February. However, Blinken has yet to take action on this matter.
