Kenyan marathoner Ekiru slapped with 10-year doping ban.
Breaking News: Kenyan Marathon Runner Titus Ekiru Banned for 10 Years
(Reuters) – In a shocking revelation, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Monday that renowned Kenyan marathon runner Titus Ekiru has been handed a 10-year ban. This unprecedented punishment comes as a result of Ekiru’s involvement in both doping and tampering, which included colluding with a high-ranking doctor at a Kenyan hospital.
One of the positive tests that led to Ekiru’s ban was for triamcinolone acetonide, which occurred during his victory at the Milan Marathon in May 2021. His remarkable time of two hours, two minutes, and 57 seconds would have ranked him as the seventh-fastest marathon athlete of all time.
The AIU’s investigation uncovered Ekiru’s attempts to obstruct their probe into two adverse analytical findings (AAFs) by providing false information and forged documentation.
Effective from his provisional suspension on June 28, 2022, Ekiru’s ban will last until June 27, 2032. Furthermore, all his results since May 16th, 2021 have been nullified, and he is required to forfeit any race prizes and money earned during that period.
It is worth noting that Ekiru also tested positive for pethidine and its marker norpethidine after winning the Abu Dhabi Marathon on November 26th.
The investigation revealed that Ekiru had received banned substance injections during undocumented visits to a hospital. The AIU was able to determine that the medical documents submitted by Ekiru to explain his AAFs were forged and inconsistent with hospital and pharmacy records.
AIU chair David Howman emphasized the significance of this case, stating, ”For athletes involved in doping and the entourage who assist them, there is one strong message from this case – there is nowhere to hide.”
Prior to his ban, Ekiru had achieved remarkable success, winning at least 10 marathons or half-marathons between 2017 and 2021.

How can athletes and sporting organizations work together to combat doping and ensure fair competition
, including the Honolulu Marathon in 2019 with an unofficial course record time of 2:07:59. His talent and achievements had made him one of the most prominent figures in the world of marathon running.
However, the recent announcement by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has tarnished Ekiru’s reputation and career. The AIU revealed that Ekiru has been handed a 10-year ban for his involvement in doping and tampering. This shocking revelation has sent shockwaves throughout the athletic community.
The investigation conducted by the AIU uncovered Ekiru’s collusion with a high-ranking doctor at a Kenyan hospital. This collusion involved doping and tampering, bringing into question the legitimacy of Ekiru’s performances in various marathons. One notable positive test was for triamcinolone acetonide, which occurred during his victory at the Milan Marathon in May 2021. This substance is classified as a banned performance-enhancing drug.
In addition to doping, Ekiru attempted to obstruct the AIU’s investigation by providing false information and forged documentation. This further implicates his involvement in illegal activities and undermines the integrity of the sport.
The consequences of Ekiru’s actions are severe. The 10-year ban, effective from his provisional suspension in June 2022, will last until June 2032. Furthermore, all his results since May 2021 have been nullified, and he is required to forfeit any race prizes and money earned during that period. This serves as a strong deterrent for other athletes who may consider engaging in similar fraudulent practices.
It is disheartening to see such a talented athlete succumb to unethical behavior. Ekiru’s ban highlights the ongoing battle against doping in sports. The AIU’s commitment to ensuring fair competition and upholding the integrity of athletics deserves commendation.
The AIU’s Chair, David Howman, emphasized the significance of this case, stating, “For athletes involved in doping and the entourage who assist them, there is one strong message from this case – there is nowhere to hide.” This statement reinforces the notion that doping and tampering will not be tolerated in the world of sports.
Moving forward, it is essential for athletes and sporting organizations to continue their efforts in combating doping. Stricter regulations, enhanced testing protocols, and increased education about the dangers and consequences of doping should be prioritized. Additionally, the collaboration between anti-doping agencies and law enforcement authorities is crucial in uncovering and prosecuting individuals involved in these illegal activities.
As the case of Titus Ekiru demonstrates, no athlete is above the rules and principles that govern fair play. The importance of integrity in sports cannot be overstated, and any breach of these principles must be met with severe consequences. The banning of Ekiru serves as a reminder to all athletes that cheating and dishonesty will not be tolerated and reinforces the need for a level playing field in sports.
