Kevin Costner Thanks Fans After ‘Yellowstone’ Scores First Major Award, Explains Why He Missed Ceremony

After his Paramount Network hit show, Kevin Costner thanked his fans “Yellowstone” Finally, the company won its first major award Tuesday at the 80th Golden Globes. He explained that he missed the ceremony because of flooding in Southern California.

The 67-year-old actor won the best actor in a drama series award for his role as John Dutton but was not at the venue to accept it. Costner said he had been advised to “shelter in place” in Santa Barbara rather than make the roughly 90-mile drive to Beverly Hills.

“Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press and [Golden Globes] for this tremendous honor and to the [Yellowstone] team for bringing John Dutton’s world to life. I share this recognition with my castmates, the producers, and our incredible crew,” Costner tweeted to his hundreds of thousands of followers.

Before the annual awards show kicked off, Costner posted a video on Twitter explaining that neither he nor his wife, Christine Baumgartner, would attend the show because the freeway had been “flooded out.”

“Hi everyone. Look, I’m so sorry for everyone who might have been tuning in to watch the Golden Globes,” Costner explained.

“Yesterday we had to pull the kids out of school in Santa Barbara,” the actor added. “This is the second time in five years that the freeway has flooded out, we found ourselves on the wrong side of the town and we couldn’t get back last night.”

“I’m just so sorry that I can’t be there,” Costner continued. “I really wanted to, I know how bad Chris wanted to support me. She went out and bought me some gold and yellow and black and silver balloons so we’re going to sit at the television and see what happens. Thank you for your support.”

Yellowstone” had been nominated for a handful of awards since the show debuted in 2018, but Costner’s Golden Globe was the first major one the show scored, TV insider noted. The cast was previously nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2022. In 2021, the series was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program (one hour or more).

Yellowstone” actress Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, is currently nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series for the 2023 Critics Choice Awards, which airs January 15 on the CW. “Yellowstone” is also nominated for Best Drama Series.
