Kevin McCarthy to tour Hawaii, assess wildfire devastation.
Rep. Kevin McCarthy to Visit Hawaii to Assess Wildfire Damage
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has announced that he will be traveling to Hawaii to assess the damage caused by the recent wildfires on the island of Maui. This comes just two weeks after President Joe Biden’s visit to the state. Biden, who was on vacation in Delaware when the fires broke out, waited two weeks before visiting the island.
“I’m headed to Hawaii to assess the damage, response, and recovery efforts on the ground from the fire in Maui,” McCarthy shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “It’s clear we need answers into how this tragic fire occurred and what could have been done to prevent it from happening.”
The Washington Examiner reached out to McCarthy’s office and the office of Gov. Josh Green (D-HI) for comment on the situation.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) also expressed concerns about the federal response to the wildfire, stating that there are “serious questions” that need to be answered. He has launched an investigation into the matter, following the speaker’s suggestion to investigate Biden over the wildfire response.

Maui County has taken legal action against Hawaiian Electric, alleging that the company is responsible for the wildfires. However, Hawaiian Electric has claimed that the power in its lines was already out before the fires started.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Maui stands at 115. The Maui Police Department has identified 40 victims so far and notified their families. Eight other victims have been identified, but their families have not yet been contacted. The county is seeking assistance from locals to help identify 388 individuals who have been reported as missing.
