Congress is racing toward a March 14 deadline for a government shutdown. Khanna pointed to a possible economic downturn resulting from the proposal as a plan of attack.
“I think the strategy is to point out that some of their policies aren’t working on the economy. You can’t cut $880 billion of Medicaid; that means the closures of hospitals and people being kicked off healthcare,” Khanna said on Fox News’s America’s Newsroom Monday. “We have a vision to become a manufacturing superpower by investing in new steel industries in this country, by having new shipbuilding, by having new aluminum. We have a vision to make sure every kid has technology education … We have a vision for making childcare affordable, for making healthcare affordable so costs go down. That’s what the Democrats need to be focused on.”
Khanna went on to disagree with Democratic leadership’s decision not to escort President Donald Trump into his first address to Congress of his second term. If Democratic leaders had walked Trump in, Khanna suggested, it would have proven “that we have three branches of government, and that needs to be upheld.”

Following Trump’s victory, the Democratic Party has struggled to find a leader. Even though House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) attempted to call for a “strong, determined, and dignified Democratic presence in the chamber,” not every representative took his words to heart.
Rep. Al Green (D-TX) was thrown out of the Capitol for loudly interrupting Trump as he spoke. Green was ultimately censured for the outburst. Other Democratic members protested with signs and by wearing black or pink.
