‘Kids Are Really Smart’: Utah GOP Governor Says Age Restrictions On Social Media Use Aren’t Fool-Proof

Spencer Cox, the government of Utah, a Republican, stated on Sunday that imposing birth restrictions on social media use is not foolproof.

Cox acknowledged in an interview on NBC’s” Meet the Press” that it would be difficult to enforce a new state law requiring sacramental parental consent for children under the age of 18 to use social media because children can find ways to get around the rules.

Cox told network Chuck Todd,” We understand that there will undoubtedly be protection problems.” It will be difficult to enter this kind of economy at any time. And we don’t anticipate being able to stop every young girl from getting around this. Just good children are. One of the issues is that.

Cox continued,” I would choose that Congress act.” He pointed to a bill written by Rep. Chris Stewart( R – UT ) that would increase the minimum age to use social media to 16 and said,” That’s where this should happen, and I think it will.”

He continued,” There is ] broad bipartisan support. ” The leader stated that we must do this in his State of the Union. Therefore, I have President Biden and very liberal members of Congress collaborating on this. However, the state must take the initiative on this, which is what we are doing. As a result, Congress can sort of band together and agree on how to stop these terrible affects from occurring.

Cox argued that the new legislation is required to safeguard children’s health and safety.

We are aware that this is killing our children, he said. ” We must begin it. Since 2012, when death, depression, anxiety, and self-harm have skyrocketed among younger women, the harm being done to our children much outweighs. Every research institution that has looked into this has blamed social media for the increase.

In response to legislators in Congress questioning TikTok’s CEO about how the platform did affect children and national security, Cox signed two bills into law on Thursday that would regulate childrens’ use of public marketing. The policy, which is the first of its kind in the country, is anticipated to face legal challenges from social media companies. The Utah government, which is under Republican control, passed the legislation earlier this year, House Bill 311 and Senate Bill 152.

The new legislation, which takes effect in 2024, includes a restrictions on children using social media between 10:30 p.m. and 6:30 m, with parents free rein to modify this ban. Under the new law, kids will also not be able to receive special messages from people they are not friends with or following and will not appear in search results.

Children can sue for problems related to social marketing used under a clause in HB 311. This aims to address” addictive” characteristics of social media, such as the”$ 250,000 fine for Social Media companies that use addictive design features” and” up to$ 2,500 per child exposed to an addictive feature.” The Utah authorities claims that for those under 16, there will be a notion of problems unless proven otherwise.
