Kimberly Fletcher: ChatGPT Exposes Weaknesses in Our School System
Schools are abuzz about the possibility of releasing ChatGPT. OpenAI’s online program has created new challenges for classrooms and workplaces. ChatGPT stands to be Generative Pretrained Transformer. ChatGPT is a chat program that will answer your questions or provide information. Chat can do more complicated tasks, such as sending a letter to your boss and even writing out a report. passing AP Lit essay.
OpenAI, which runs ChatGPT, is backed by Sam Altman, tech celebrity Elon Musk, and Bill Gate’s Microsoft, among others. The group’s stated mission, according to its website, is to make artificial intelligence more accessible. “benefits all of humanity.” Within months of the program’s launch, there are a flurry of questions about cybersecurity risk, factual inaccuracies, and potential problems with ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a great tool for moms.
Before we can tackle that important question, let’s take a hard look at what our education system is teaching children. Moms have long been highlighting the harmful practice of teaching children to pass a test. Instead of encouraging our children to apply skills and understand concepts that are applicable to real life, schools have been distracted by short-term memorization of the test. Moms want to encourage the retention of skills that can lead to life-long learning, and not just passing an examination.
This education system has many flaws. One is the lack of problem-solving and critical thinking skills. If students are not challenged to learn, they will be less likely to succeed. How Instead of learning, they are given answers to memorize. They aren’t growing in their ability to understand and apply what they have learned.
While academic standards are declining, society has stopped encouraging a sense of personal responsibility. This attitude is reflected in the classroom. Instead of teaching children that their actions have consequences and blaming others, we place blame on them. “systems.” Most parents and anyone who has ever worked in schools will agree that our school is plagued by behavioral problems. Our students are often bored and unmotivated due to a lack of real-world learning and a decline of personal responsibility.
This sad state of American education has led to a large exodus of mentors, bus drivers, coaches and teachers. Many mothers are opting for homeschooling in an effort to help their children develop character, as well as pass the test. Without virtue-based growth and personal responsibility, we cannot have a civically educated body.
ChatGPT has made these issues more prominent in a unique way. Many educators are concerned about the availability of an emerging technology program that can generate complex answers quickly and without the student having to do any of the work. Instead of having to write a paper on a complicated topic, students can have an AI-generated essay written for them. Teachers can also use the AI to generate essays. Fakes are difficult to detect. We encourage academic dishonesty and provide students with access to sophisticated forms of plagiarism.
In order for our students to thrive—and in turn, our nation to thrive—we need to build a firm foundation of honesty, self-respect, critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and a strong work ethic. Without a moral compass, academic integrity is impossible. It is high time that American classrooms reflect this.
It’s important to remember that ChatGPT will only be as dangerous as we allow it. ChatGPT allows people to train the program with human thought. The program becomes smarter as it interacts with humans. Moms for America ChatGPT should be banned from schools. If it is discovered that ChatGPT has been used in classwork and assignments, there should also be serious consequences.
We prepare our students for success by rewarding hard work and taking responsibility at school. Our nation was founded upon principles of liberty that demand virtue and accountability. Children who are not taught to have a strong sense and self-respect will not be able to resist the misuse of new technology. Our students must learn that it is impossible to outsource their thinking. It is vital for America’s future.
