The Biden administration has faced backlash from state and local leaders for refusing to re-open public schools. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said Joe Biden is betraying children by keeping schools closed.

On Thursday, Cassidy spoke from the Senate floor. He asserted children were being left behind in the classroom, with a disproportionate amount of those affected coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, as they are much less likely to log into their accounts even with full computer and internet access.

This came amid Democrat-led lockdown orders, which mandated the suspension of in-person instruction throughout numerous schools across the country.

“A place where children go not just to learn, but to have social workers make sure they aren’t being abused at home, a dietary staff to make sure they have adequate nutrition, but also to learn, has been closed for a year,” Cassidy noted.

He also stressed Joe Biden has ignored data that showed children could safely return to school. Cassidy cited a study from the University of Chicago, which found a group of children could return to the classroom without getting infected with three-feet social distancing measures in place. He also mentioned a CDC study from January 2021, which found little evidence of virus spread in a school setting when the recommended precautions were taken.

Cassidy also remarked while well-off students have the option to attend private schools or charter programs that have not suspended in-person instruction, poor families have not had this option. He suggested if the Biden administration cared about children’s future, they could take funding from closed public schools and give this to parents to fund their children’s education elsewhere.

“This administration’s policy four months into their four years demonstrates betrayal after betrayal after betrayal,” Cassidy stated. “This administration is betraying the most vulnerable children in our country.”

Cassidy stressed Joe Biden’s refusal to re-open schools cannot be attributed to either a lack of funds or concerns over safety, but rather to a lack of will. He called on the Democrat to “safely re-open schools now.”
