LA suspect faces manslaughter charges for crash that killed 3 Uber riders.
Driver Charged with Vehicular Manslaughter After Fatal Crash in South Los Angeles
In a tragic incident that shook South Los Angeles, a driver is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter after a high-speed collision with an Uber vehicle resulted in the death of three female passengers. The driver, Gregory Black, is accused of speeding and running a red light before slamming into the Uber car. The devastating crash occurred at the intersection of South Vermont Avenue and West Century Boulevard.
According to authorities, Black was driving a Mercedes at an alarming speed, possibly reaching 90 mph, when he disregarded a red light and collided with the Uber vehicle, a Honda, which was traveling westbound on Century. The impact was so severe that the suspect’s car spun out and came to a rest in the center median. Black sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital before being arrested.

The victims of this tragic accident have been identified as Juvelyn Arroyo, 23, from San Juan Capistrano; Veronica Amezola, 23, from Santa Ana; and Kimberly Izquierdo, 27, also from Santa Ana. Amezola and Izquierdo were sisters, and all three had been close friends since childhood, as shared by their grieving relatives on GoFundMe pages created for both families.
The Uber driver, a 38-year-old woman, and a male passenger sustained lesser injuries in the crash, according to authorities.
Gregory Black was officially charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter on August 29. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment at the Compton Courthouse and is scheduled to appear in court next week for a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence for a trial. Black is currently held in custody with a bail set at $4 million.
During a press conference, Detective Ryan Moreno of the Los Angeles Police Department emphasized the ongoing investigation into the crash. It remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. However, Moreno revealed that Black is a known gang member with a history of arrests and convictions, including a 2020 murder case for which he was on probation at the time of the crash.
Moreno expressed his commitment to ensuring that individuals who engage in reckless driving and cause fatal accidents face appropriate consequences. He acknowledged the immense pain suffered by the victims’ families, stating, ”It doesn’t bring back the victims. These families are suffering right now. One of the families, they’re preparing for two funerals, you know, both of their daughters.”
Describing the crash scene as “just horrible,” Moreno highlighted the alarming number of speed-related accidents in the area in recent weeks. He revealed that the South Traffic Division of the Los Angeles Police Department alone has recorded 70 traffic-related fatalities this year.
A GoFundMe page established for Juvelyn Arroyo’s family has already raised over $13,000, demonstrating the community’s support during this difficult time. Additionally, a separate page has been set up to assist the families of Kimberly Izquierdo and Veronica Amezola.
