Marty Walsh, Secretary for Labor, officially leaves the Biden Administration to head the National Hockey League Players’ Union, Politico reported Tuesday.
Politico has been told by sources that Walsh is currently in contract negotiations with the NHL Players Association. The Washington Free Beacon reported Walsh indicated last week that he was thinking of leaving the administration to take up a union job.
Walsh, who was a friend and an ally of President Joe Biden before running Boston unions and becoming the mayor in 2014, faced controversies in both positions. Walsh’s role in brokering the September election has been praised by the White House. “compromise between freight rail carriers and unions,” Politico observed that rail unions later rejected this compromise.
Julie Su is Walsh’s possible successor and deputy. She faces her own controversy. As California labor secretary, Su “oversaw an unemployment website plagued by glitches,” Which “paid out billions of dollars of fraudulent claims,” The Free Beacon reported. California’s state auditor accused Su’s Department of mishandling the payments. “in large part because Su had waived eligibility considerations.”
“With Republicans taking over control of the House, Walsh would have faced significant congressional oversight” Politico reported that Virginia Foxx, the chairwoman of House Education and Workforce Committee, has criticized Walsh for joining a picket line in October 2021. Foxx criticizes Walsh for joining a picketline in October 2021. Walsh disagreed. “not remain an objective observer of what’s happening, going and getting on the picket lines.”
Biden’s labor secretary is the latest to resign. Eric Lander, the former chief science adviser, resigned last year following bullying allegations. Brian Deese and Chief of Staff Ron Klain also resigned.
The White House and Labor Department are yet to announce Walsh’s final day.
