Lakewood Center Mall shuts early due to rowdy youth gathering.
Rowdy Juveniles Cause Chaos at Lakewood Center Mall
In an event that could only be described as chaotic, hundreds of rowdy juveniles flocked to Lakewood Center Mall on September 23. The scene quickly spiraled out of control, prompting sheriff’s deputies to call for reinforcements from neighboring areas in an attempt to restore order.
According to Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau, the gathering was sparked by a social media post, attracting approximately 300 juveniles who came and went throughout the afternoon. While there were reports of an initial fight, deputies swiftly intervened to diffuse the situation.
The Lakewood sheriff’s station was forced to seek assistance from the Century, Norwalk, and Pico Rivera stations to remove the juveniles from the stores and the mall premises, Koerner revealed.
By 7 p.m., the shutdown operation was initiated, resulting in the closure of anchor stores and the entire mall by 9 p.m. A KCAL video captured at around 9 p.m. showcased a deserted mall, save for numerous sheriff’s patrol cars.
According to the Orange County Register, the unruly teens engaged in reckless behavior such as climbing on cars and setting off fireworks. Fortunately, no arrests, thefts, or injuries were reported during the incident, Koerner confirmed.
