New Study Reveals High Rates of Suicide, Psychiatric Issues in Transgender Individuals

A Landmark Study Reveals Disturbing Findings About Transgender Individuals

A new Danish landmark study finds that suicide rates and psychiatric conditions are much higher among trans-identifying people.

According to the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, trans-identifying people in Denmark had a suicide death rate 3.5 times higher and a suicide attempt rate 7.7 times higher than those who did not identify as transgender.

Between 1980 and 2021, there were 92 suicide attempts and 12 suicide deaths among the 3,759 trans-identifying individuals included in the study.

The study examined the medical and legal gender change records of nearly seven million people in Denmark over the last four decades, including almost 3,800 transgender individuals.

One concerning finding was that trans-identifying people tended to die younger overall, whether by suicide or other causes.

However, the study also revealed that suicide rates in both groups decreased over the four decades analyzed.

The study stated, “Results suggest that transgender individuals had significantly higher rates of suicide attempt, suicide mortality, suicide-unrelated mortality, and all-cause mortality compared with the nontransgender population.”

Furthermore, the study found that the rate of psychiatric conditions was significantly higher among the trans-identifying group.

Almost 43% of trans-identifying individuals had a psychiatric diagnosis, compared to only 7% of those who did not identify as transgender.

Dr. Morten Frisch, a sexual health epidemiologist at Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen and one of the authors of the study, emphasized the urgency of addressing this significant problem.

The study’s authors suggested that their findings might also apply to the U.S., as both countries have similar suicide rates. However, data from the Williams Institute at the University of California in Los Angeles indicates that the rate of people identifying as transgender could be up to ten times higher in the U.S. than in Denmark.

It is worth noting that Denmark is known for its progressive stance on transgender issues and is considered one of the most LGBT-friendly countries in the world.

The group of Danish trans-identifying individuals analyzed in the study were officially recognized as transgender in either their legal or medical records.

In the U.S., concerns have been raised about the long-term effects of medical interventions such as puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender surgeries. Some individuals who previously identified as transgender have also expressed regret about undergoing these interventions.

As more minors seek hormone treatments and gender surgeries, at least 17 states have implemented restrictions. Meanwhile, there has been a significant increase in the number of youth adopting new gender identities. Last year, an estimated 300,000 minors aged 13 to 17 identified as transgender, nearly triple the number from 2017.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a free hotline for individuals in crisis or distress or for those looking to help someone else. It is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255.
