A tragic incident unfolded in Modesto, California, last week, where a 27-year-old homeless mother lost her life after being run over by a lawn mower. The family of the victim claims that investigators left “chunks” of her body scattered across the grass.
The incident occurred at Beard Brook Park, where Christine Chavez, a homeless mother with a 9-year-old daughter, was sleeping in a grassy area. The park had recently been purchased by E&J Gallo Winery, and Chavez had been camping there for several years.
According to the Modesto Bee, a landscaper operating a John Deere tractor with a pull-behind mower accidentally ran over Chavez. The worker claims he did not see her until he had already passed through the area.
Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene after the worker called 9-1-1 for help.
The family of the victim expressed their anguish over the negligent and messy clean-up process. In an interview with the press, the victim’s sister, Rosalinda, said, “They left big chunks of her all over the place, just covered up with the grass.” The family collected fragments of Chavez’s bones, skull, and teeth in the days following her death.
There is a belief among the family that Chavez’s remains were mishandled due to her homeless status, suggesting that investigators did not view her as a valued member of society.
Prior to the ownership change, the park served as a popular camping ground for the homeless in the area. Other homeless individuals reported seeing Chavez washing her hair in the park’s creek before settling down to sleep near the playground and baseball field.
The mower arrived approximately twenty minutes later, leading to the tragic accident.
Seeking justice for their loved one’s death and advocating for stricter legislation to protect homeless individuals, Chavez’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for legal representation.
