Landslide in Indonesia kills at least 11; dozens missing

At least 50 people are missing and 11 have been killed in a large landslide that took place near Jakarta, Indonesia.

Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, told reporters Monday that heavy rains had fallen on an island off Indonesia in South China Sea. This caused a massive mud slide. The Natuna Regency authorities stated that 50 bodies had been discovered dead, and that there are 50 additional people who may have disappeared in the mud. According to them, they are concerned that the death rate will increase in the next few days.  

 “Many people who need help have not been reached because we still have difficulty accessing the affected areas,” said Muhari.

The rescue party had one person named “Junainah” According to reporters, the national police, soldiers and volunteer forces risked their lives travelling to the isolated island. His comments included that rescue efforts were impeded by stormy weather, large waves and downed communication lines.
